Notes: The magnetic moment of Co/Pd multilayers where the Co layer is one layer thick has been calculated using the discrete variational-Xα cluster method. The moment of the multilayer per Co atom as a function of the number of Pd layers (nPd) shows a maximum at nPd=3. Moreover, it is found that the magnetic moment at the central Pd layer is induced antiferromagnetically for nPd=5. We conclude that the Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida interaction is dominant, rather than the d-d interaction between the central Pd layer and the Co layers, while the d-d interaction is dominant between the other Pd layers and the Co layers.

Notes: The clinical significance of serum apolipoprotein A-1 levels as an indicator of hepatic protein synthesis after hepatectomy was investigated. A total of 50 patients who had undergone hepatectomy at our department from 1997 to 1999 were selected for this study. The serum levels of apolipoprotein A-1, indocyanine green dye retention at 15 minutes, lectin-cholesterol acyltransferase, prealbumin, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were measured in these patients preoperatively and on postoperative days 7 and 14. The type of hepatic resection conducted was partial resection in 13 cases, subsegmentectomy in 13 cases, segmentectomy in five cases, and bisegmentectomy in 19 cases. All the patients tolerated the operation, and none of the cases had any severe complications, such as liver failure. In most cases, the serum apolipoprotein A-1 levels decreased on postoperative day 7 and recovered by day 14. There were no significant differences in the changes in apolipoprotein A-1 levels between patients with the individual types of operative procedures. The serum apolipoprotein A-1 levels showed significant correlations with the serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, lectin-cholesterol acyltransferase and prealbumin levels on postoperative days 7 and 14; however, there was no significant correlation with the indocyanine green retention test. When the cases were divided into three groups according to the serum level of apolipoprotein A-1 on postoperative day 7 (group A: over 81 mg/dl, group B: 61–80 mg/dl, group C: under 60 mg/dl), the serum indocyanine green retention, prealbumin, lectin-cholesterol acyltransferase and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in group C were significantly lower than those in group A on postoperative day 7. On the basis of these results, it is suggested that the pattern of changes in the serum apolipoprotein A-1 levels may be a good indicator of the hepatic protein synthetic ability during the perioperative period after hepatectomy.

Notes: Abstract: To clarify the changes that occur in hepatic venous oxygen saturation (Shvo2) during hepatic ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, we examined the relationship between Shvo2, hepatic tissue blood flow (HTBF), and portal vein pressure (PVP) in a warm I/R model using pig livers. Female pigs weighing 18–23 kg were subjected to warm I/R under extracorporeal circulation between the superior mesentric vein and the left jugular vein to avoid portal congestion. The warm ischemic times were 120 min (n = 4), 180 min (n = 14), and 240 min (n = 4). Shvo2, HTBF, and PVP were measured after reperfusion. The survival rates of the pigs 3 days after reperfusion were 100% in the 120-min group, 57% in the 180-min group, and 25% in the 240-min group. In the 180-min group, the Shvo2 was lower in the pigs that died than in those that survived. There was a significant correlation between Shvo2 and both PVP and HTBF after reperfusion. Histological examination revealed findings of severe I/R injury in pigs with a low Shvo2, and mild I/R injury in pigs with a stable Shvo2. These observations suggest that the changes in Shvo2 could reflect the degree of hepatic I/R injury, especially that related to microcirculatory disturbances occurring at the sinusoid levels.

Notes: Summary We investigated the possibility of shortening the interval between courses of the commonly prescribed 28-day MVP (mitomycin C, vindesine, and cisplatin) regimen in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We conducted a nonrandomized phase II study using recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF, Chugai) to explore the possibility of shortening the cycle length to 21 days and compared the results with those obtained in historical controls who had received the standard 28-day regimen. A total of 40 patients, 37 of whom were evaluable, were entered in the 21-day treatment group of the trial and were compared with 38 historical controls who had received standard 28-day cycles of MVP at our institution. Patients in the 21-day group received mitomycin C at 8 mg/m2 on day 1, vindesine at 3 mg/m2 on days 1 and 8, and cisplatin at 80 mg/m2 on day 1, with the schedule being repeated every 21 days. Controls had received the same regimen, albeit at 28-day intervals. G-CSF was given s. c. to the patients in the 21-day group at a daily dose of 2 μg/kg from day 2 to day 21 of every MVP cycle. The administration of G-CSF to these patients accelerated neutrophil recovery as compared with that observed in the historical controls. Significant differences were found between the two groups in terms of mean neutrophil nadirs (2666/μl in the first cycle and 1369/μl in the second for the G-CSF group vs 416/μl in the first cycle and 685/μl in the second cycle for the control group;P〈0.0001) and the mean duration of neutropenia (≤1000/μl; 1.0 day in the first cycle and 1.7 days in the second for the G-CSF group vs 8.0 days in the first cycle and 6.9 days in the second for the control gruop;P〈0.0001). This enabled 32 (86%) of 37 patients in the G-CSF group to complete ≥2 cycles on schedule. In 10 patients, the bone marrow aspirates taken after G-CSF administration showed increases in band neutrophil and myelocyte percentages. In conclusion, MVP treatment of patients with NSCLC at 21-day intervals is possible with the support of G-CSF.

Notes: The hydrophobic surface of oriented poly(propylene) film (OPP) was modified to a hydrophilic one by a novel photo-grafting procedure using acrylamide (AM) as monomer. A deoxygenated acetone solution containing AM and benzophenone (BP) or other sensitizers was brought into contact with OPP film and the reaction system was photoirradiated from the other side of the polymer film. Within a few minutes, surface photo-grafting resulted. The influences of solvent, sensitizer, and additives revealed that the graft polymerization was initiated by hydrogen abstraction from the polymer surface by the triplet excited state of the sensitizer. IR Spectroscopy as well as ESCA measurements confirmed that the graft polymerization occurred on the film surface. The wettability of the grafted OPP film is discussed and correlated with the relative amount of surface grafting. The contact angle of untreated OPP film to water (101°) decreased to ≈40° after surface photografting. The drastic change of surface properties makes the practical application of the present technique feasible.

Notes: Photoreactions of maleic anhydride (MAH) with unsaturated olefinic polymers such as 1,2-polybutadiene, 1,4-polybutadiene, block copolymer of styrene and butadiene, polystyrene, poly(styrene-co-isoprene), and poly(styrene-alt-methyl methacrylate) were investigated in air. When the polymers have olefinic unsaturation, the addition of MAH to the polymers in homogeneous solutions proceeded efficiently by a chain mechanism, and the quantum yield of the photoaddition of MAH was greater than unity under irradiation at λ 〉 310 nm. From the effects of solvent and photosensitizer, a radical chain mechanism involving crosslinking of the polymers by MAH molecules was suggested. Together with the spectroscopic results, the reaction mechanism was discussed. The photoaddition reaction was then applied to the surface photomodification of polymer films. Photoreactions were conducted at the interphase between solid polymer and acetone solution of MAH and also at the interphase between solid polymer and gaseous MAH. Irradiation by a 300-W high-pressure mercury lamp could bring about considerable modification of the surface properties of the polymers, which then show improved wettability and dyeability. From the oxygen permeation experiments, the present interfacial phototreatment was shown to provide a double-layered polymer film in which one side of the film is polar and hydrophilic while the other side is nonpolar and hydrophobic.
