Notes: Abstract: Nitrogen oxides, such as nitric oxide, have been shown to regulate neuronal functions, including neurotransmitter release. We investigated the effect of S-nitroso-l-cysteine (SNC) on noradrenaline (NA) release in the rat hippocampus in vivo and in vitro. SNC stimulated [3H]NA release from prelabeled hippocampal slices in a dose-dependent manner. SNC stimulated endogenous NA release within 30 min to almost five times the basal level in vivo (microdialysis in freely moving rats). In a Na+-containing Tyrode's buffer, SNC-stimulated [3H]NA release was inhibited 30% by the coaddition of l-leucine. In the Na+-free, choline-containing buffer, SNC-stimulated [3H]NA release, which was similar to that in the Na+-containing buffer, was inhibited markedly by l-leucine, l-alanine, l-methionine, l-phenylalanine, and l-tyrosine. The effects of the other amino acids examined were smaller or very limited. The effect of l-leucine was stronger than that of d-leucine. A specific inhibitor of the L-type amino acid transporter, 2-aminobicyclo[2.2.1]-heptane-2-carboxylate (BCH), inhibited the effects of SNC on [3H]NA release in the Na+-free buffer. Uptake of l-[3H]leucine into the slices in the Na+-free buffer was inhibited by SNC, BCH, and l-phenylalanine, but not by l-lysine. The effect of SNC on cyclic GMP accumulation was not inhibited by l-leucine, although SNC stimulated cyclic GMP accumulation at concentrations up to 25 µM, much less than the concentration that stimulates NA release. These findings suggest that SNC is incorporated into rat hippocampus via the L-type-like amino acid transporter, at least in Na+-free conditions, and that SNC stimulates NA release in vivo and in vitro in a cyclic GMP-independent manner.

Notes: Semi-crystalline mesoporous titania films were prepared by the reactions of titanium isopropoxide(TTIP) in acidic aqueous solutions containing EO106PO70EO106 triblock copolymer (F127) and1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene (TIPBz). Adsorption experiments of dye molecules over the mesoporousfilms calcined at different temperatures and prepared with different TTIP/F127 molar ratios showedthat adsorption property of the dye molecules would be related to the crystallinity of the frameworksand the macroporosity at the surfaces

Notes: The (Y,Yb)MnO3 films were crystallized on Y2O3 layers using alkoxy-derived precursor solutions. As a result of investigation of the effect of the Y2O3 layer on the dielectric properties of the (Y,Yb)MnO3/Y2O3/Si, the crystallographic properties such as the orientation and surface morphology of the (Y,Yb)MnO3 thin films depended on the crystallographic appearance of the insulator layer. Following that, the dielectric properties of the MFIS structures varied. For the construction of excellent MFIS structure, the improvement of the orientation, crystallinity, and surface smoothness of the (Y,Yb)MnO3 film by the optimization of the microstructure and dielectric property of the insulator is necessary

Notes: Lead-free Ba(Ti1-xZrx)O3 (BTZ) thin films were fabricated on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrates by the chemical solution deposition (CSD) process. The microstructure of the BTZ (x = 0.00 to 0.20) thin films was improved by additional sintering process, and their crystallite sizes were increased in each composition. The dielectric constant er and piezoelectric constant d33 of the BTZ thin films depended on the crystallite size. We give a guide for further investigation to improve the characteristics of BTZ thin films

Notes: Abstract Highly transparent silica-surfactant nanocomposite films containing photosynthetic pigments have been successfully formed through the solubilization of chlorophyll a (Chl a) into surfactant micelles. The UV-vis absorption spectra indicated that a large amount of Chl a were transformed into pheophytin a in the films. These photosynthetic pigments were well dispersed in the surfactant assemblies and their chlorin rings were exposed to the surface of silica layers. Even under an air atmosphere, the photostability of immobilized pigments was largely improved in comparison with that in a homogeneous Chl a solution. Because both Chl a and pheophytin a molecules are effective for the photosensitive charge separation, the present film system is very suitable for heterogeneous immobilizing media for photosynthetic pigments from the viewpoint of in vitro biomimetic devices for solar energy conversion.

Notes: Abstract Silanol groups in the mesoporous silica derived from a layered silicate, kanemite (NaHSi12O5 ċ3H2O), were esterified with alcohols (CnH2n+1OH n=2 , 4, and 8). Most of the silanol groups in the mesopores were modified with ethanol though some silanol groups remained after the reactions with 1-butanol and 1-octanol. With the increase in the alkyl chain lengths of the alcohols, the pore sizes of the esterified products decreased and the hydrophobicity increased.

Notes: The Raman spectra of 14 positional isomers of carboxylic acids esters with 17 skeletal atoms, CH3(CH2)m-1COO(CH2)n-1CH3(CmCOOCn) with m + n = 15 and m = 1 - 14, have been measured in the crystalline state at liquid nitrogen temperature. The relationship between the observed wavenumbers of the characteristic bands and the positions of the  - C(=O) - O -  group in the molecular chain was examined. All of the positional isomers of CmCOOCn with m + n = 15 exhibit a strong LAM-1 band in the region between 147 and 136 cm-1. The LAM-1 wavenumbers for the isomers which have the  - C(=O) - O -  group almost in the middle of the molecular chain are slightly higher (147 - 143 cm-1) than those for the isomers which have the same group almost at the end of the chain. In order to elucidate the observed LAM-1 wavenumbers, the Raman spectra of two homologous series of esters, C5COOCn and C6COOCn, were examined. All isomers of CmCOOCn give a strong band at about 1135 cm-1 assignable to the k = 1 mode of the C - C stretching vibrations. Some of the isomers give an additional k = 1 band at about 1125 cm-1. The isomers of CmCOOCn, which exhibit the two k = 1 bands, have the  - C(=O) - O -  group almost in the middle of the molecular chain, and appear to give the LAM-1 band at the higher wavenumbers. In the crystalline state all of the esters examined take the all-trans conformation with the  - C(=O) - O -  group part incorporated.
