Notes: Three-periodic nets are connected graphs which permit embeddings having a threefold periodicity. To many crystal structures such nets can be meaningfully assigned and used to express the topology of the structures. It is shown that such a net can be fully characterized by a finite graph in which the edges are labelled in a suitable way. The reversal of the process of assigning a labelled finite graph to a given net can be used to generate nets of real and hypothetical crystal structures in a systematic fashion.

Notes: Summary Visual examination, electron-microscopic observation and infrared-spectroscopic analysis demonstrate that the thermodynamically unstable calcium oxalate trihydrate, which supposedly plays an important role in the formation of certain urinary calculi, is a commonly occurring constituent of urinary stones.

Notes: Abstract For the mineral fluorapatite, Ca10(PO4)6F2, a potential model of the polarizable ion type has been developed in order to reproduce the following physical constants: the vibrational frequencies (transverse and longitudinal), the elastic constants and the static and high frequency dielectric constants. The parameters of the model are short range force constants, ionic charges and ionic polarizabilities. The polarizable ion model was built up in three stages in order to facilitate comparison with simpler models. In the first stage a short range valence type model was set up, assuming interaction up to a distance of 3.5 Å. In the second stage this model was extended to a rigid ion model by the addition of long range Coulomb forces. In the third stage, which resulted in the polarizable ion model, the polarizabilities of the ions were also taken into account. There was good agreement between calculated and observed data. This demonstrates that even for a crystal structure as complicated as that of fluorapatite with 42 atoms per unit cell a potential model can be constructed which reproduces in a satisfactory way the above-mentioned physical constants.

Description / Table of Contents: ZusammenfaBung Reine Cholesterinsteine können mit Chenodesoxycholsäure aufgelöst werden.
Notes: Summary Pure cholesterolgallstones can be diBolved by chenodesoxycholic acid (CDC). The composition of 208 gallstones was examined: 93.7% contained cholesterol, but only 10.6% were pure cholesterol stones. Radiologically no differentiation between pure cholesterolgallstones and mixed stones with a low calcium content was poBible. With CDC there is an increase of liver enzymes, choleraic diarrhea, and hepatotoxic lithocholic acid. As a rule, recurrent stones are observed after discontinued treatment with CDC.

Notes: Abstract Magnesium ammonium phosphate monohydrate, MgNH4PO4·H2O, has been detected as a constituent of urinary calculi. The substance was identified by X-ray powder diffraction analysis, and the analysis was confirmed by comparison with synthetic material. Magnesium ammonium phosphate monohydrate may occur in secondary calculi which are formed in a strongly inflamed urinary tract. A possible mechanism of formation is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Exposure of andalusite and kyanite powders (⩽40 μm) to high dynamic pressures revealed a strongly different behaviour of the two materials against shock. While experiments on andalusite powders yielded characteristic shock-induced phase transformations, kyanite powders did not show any phase change upon release from shock compression. X-ray patterns and infra-red spectra proved the formation of 3/2-mullite from andalusite, and infra-red spectra also indicated the formation of long-range-disordered Al2O3 and SiO2. While the formation of mullite must be associated with high (shock) temperatures, the formation of the Al2O3 + SiO2 oxide mixture may be a (shock) pressure effect. The lack of temperature-induced transformations in kyanite may be explained by the lower porosity of the sample tablets as compared to those of andalusite. The absence of highpressure transformations in kyanite is most probably due to its dense structure which is more resistant to shock waves than the more open andalusite structure.

Description / Table of Contents: Infrared and RAMAN spectra of teepleite, Na2[B(OH)4]Cl, were recorded. Especially helpful for the assignment of the frequencies was an IR spectrum of a thin single crystal, taken with polarized radiation. The assignment was made on the basis of a factor group analysis.
