    Notes: The solid microstructure built in the solid governs the properties of materials elaboratedfrom the melt. In order to clarify the dynamical mechanisms controlling solidification processing,we use in situ and real-time synchrotron X-ray radiography at ESRF (European SynchrotronRadiation Facility) to analyze microstructure formation in thin aluminum alloys solidified in theBridgman facility installed at the ID19 beamline. During directional solidification of Al - 3.5 wt%Ni alloys, global mechanical constraints induced by the shape are found to act on the solidmicrostructure. In particular, radiography videos of dendritic growth show disorientations ofsidebranches induced by mechanical stresses. In the solidification of AlPdMn quasicrystals, liveimaging reveals that facetted growth proceeds by the lateral motion of ledges at the solid-meltinterface. When the solidification rate is increased, the kinetic undercooling becomes sufficient forgrain nucleation and growth in the liquid. These grains develop specific features that can beattributed to grain competition and concomitant poisoning of growth caused by the rejection ofaluminum in the melt

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Während des NOAMP-Experiments wurden in einem Gebietbei 47° 20′ N und 20° W 20 Tiefseestürme mit Geschwindigkeiten bis zu 27 cm/s und einer Dauer zwischen 3 und 25 Tagen gemessen. Stromfunktionskarten zeigen, daß, zumindest im Zeitraum von September '83 bis September '84, die Stürme stets im Zusammenhang mit tiefreichenden synoptischen Wirbeln auftreten. Diese Ereignisse sind von herausragender Bedeutung für die Ausbreitung am Tiefseeboden eingebrachter Stoffe. Sie ermöglichen den Austausch von Wasserkörpern durch die Sprungschicht zwischen der stark durchmischten Bodengrenzschicht und dem geschichteten Inneren der Tiefsee. Die Wirbel, mit Lebenszeiten bis zu mehreren Monaten, können Wasserkörper mit Eigenschaften, die ihn von der umgebenden Wassermasse unterscheiden, einfangen und transportieren sie vertikal und horizontal innerhalb des Wirbels. Jeder Wirbel deformiert solche Wasserkörper zu dünnen Scheiben, bzw. zu dünnen Filamenten im Zweidimensionalen, und schafft somit die notwendige Voraussetzung für das Wirken kleinskaliger Vermischungsprozesse.
    Abstract: Résumé Durant l'expérience NOAMP (septembre 1983 – Mai 1986), vingt tempêtes de grands fonds avec des vitesses supérieures à 27 cm/s et des durées comprises entre 3 et 25 jours, ont été observées dans un secteur centré sur le point 47° 20′ nord et 20° ouest. Le calcul des cartes de courant montre clairement que les tempêtes sous-marines observées entre septembre 1983 et semtembre 1984 sont reliées à des tourbillons synoptiques atteignant de grandes profondeurs. Ces évènements sont des mécanismes importants pour la dispersion d'éléments — traces libérés sur le fond de l'océan. Ils permettent aux particules de franchir l'interface entre la couche limite de fond, homogène, et la partie stratifiée de la mer profonde. Les tourbillons qui ont des durées de vie de plusieurs mois, piègent les particules et facilitent leurs transports horizontaux et verticaux au sein même du tourbillon. Chaque tourbillon du fait du cisaillement, transforme un volume d'eau contaminée en minces couches, ou plutôt en minces filets d'eau, si l'on se place dans les deux dimensions. Cela génère en réalité un processus de mélange à petite échelle.
    Notes: Summary During the NOAMP Experiment (September '83 to May '86), 20 benthic storms with velocities of up to 27 cm/s and a duration of between 3 and 25 days, have been observed in a region centered at 47° 20′ N and 20° W. The calculation of streamfunction maps shows clearly, that all storms between September '83 and September '84 occur in connection with deep reaching synoptic vortices. These events are important mechanisms for the dispersion of tracers, which are released at the seabed. They enable the particles to pass the interface between the well-mixed bottom boundary layer and the stratified interior of the deep sea. The eddies, with lifetimes of up to several months, trap the particles and facilitate horizontal and vertical transports within the eddy. Each vortex, by means of its shear, deforms a parcel of contaminated water to thin sheets, respectively to thin filaments with regard to two dimensions. This makes small-scale mixing processes work effectively.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Auf der leichten Seite einer River Plume Front mit starkem Salzgehaltsgradient wurde der fluoreszierende Tracer Rhodamin B ausgebracht. Um größere Teile der eigentlichen Frontalzone zu erfassen, konnte wegen der sehr schnellen frontparallelen Rhodaminausbreitung der Fleck nicht immer vollständig vermessen werden. Konventionelle Auswerteverfahren sind deshalb auf diesen Versuch nicht anwendbar. Die außergewöhnlich hohe Korrelation zwischen dem Salzgehalt und der Rhodaminkonzentration führte zu der Idee, die letztere als Funktion des Salzgehaltes darzustellen: Da die Gradienten und somit die Flüsse des Salzgehaltes klein sind verglichen mit denen des Rhodamins, kann der Salzgehalt in erster Näherung als konservative Größe betrachtet werden. Damit sind auch die großskalige Deformation der Wassermasse und der advektive Term in der Transportgleichung in erster Näherung eliminiert. Das Aufbrechen eines Frontabschnittes in zwei gegensinnig rotierende Wirbel und deren Bewegung in der Wassermasse konnte als Transportmechanismus für gelöste Stoffe durch die Front hindurch aus den Messungen belegt werden.
    Abstract: Résumé Le traceur fluorescent Rhodamine B a été laché sur le bord le moins dense d'un front de panache de rivière à fort gradient de salinité. Pour relever la plus grande partie du front proprement dit, on n'a pas pu complètement effectuer le levé de toute la tache de rhodamine par le bâtiment, car la diffusion de la rhodamine parallèllement au front était très rapide. Par conséquent, les méthodes d'analyses conventionnelles ne sont pas applicables. La correlation extraordinairement importante entre la salinité et la concentration en rhodamine suggérait l'idée de représenter la concentration en rhodamine en fonction de la salinité, considérant cette dernière comme une propriété conservative en première approximation en raison de ses faibles gradients et flux. De ce fait, la déformation à grande échelle des masses d'eau et le terme d'avection de l'équation de transport, sont éliminées en première approximation. Un autre mécanisme pour le transport à travers le front des substances dissoutes, consistant en la rupture du front en 2 tourbillons tournant en sens inverse et leurs mouvements dans les masses d'eau, a été détecté par les mesures.
    Notes: Summary The fluorescent tracer Rhodamine B was released at the light side of a river plume front with a strong salinity gradient. To survey greater parts of the proper front, the whole rhodamine patch could not always be completely covered with ship sections due to the fast front-parallel spreading of the rhodamine. Therefore, conventional analyzing methods are not applicable. The extraordinarily high correlation between salinity and rhodamine concentration suggested the idea to determine rhodamine concentration as a function of salinity, regarding the latter as a conservative property due to its smaller gradients and fluxes. Thereby the large scale deformation of the water mass and the advective term of the transport equation are eliminated in first approximation. A further mechanism for cross-frontal transport of dissolved matter, the breaking of the front partially into two counter-rotating vortices and their movement within the water mass, was detected by the measurements.

    Notes: Conclusions In spite of poor weather conditions, for which vertical mixing down to the bottom is expected in general, the rhodamine is still trapped between vertical and horizontal gradients 3 days after release. The turbulent flux through the front is so small that a significant transport through the front can probably only be effected by vortices occasionally occurring — as observed in the experiment of October '82. The front-parallel and cross-frontal spreading velocities have the same order of magnitude as in October '82. However, the decrease of rhodamine peak concentration runs much slower: in the first experiment, the spreading was hindered by only two boundaries, the front and the bottom. Now, the rhodamine is embedded in a field of gradients, allowing spreading in one dimension only, i.e. parallel to the isopycnicals. In this stage only processes reducing the gradients can intensify the exchange. To understand the dynamic of oceanic features such as fronts and vortices, it is essential to observe the movement of a marked water mass within the whole system. Again, the reconstructed distributions show clearly the ability of rhodamine to trace processes in the order of magnitude of several miles right down to very small scale processes, as the diffusion of the tracer through the front.
