Notes: Bioresorbable and functionally graded apatites (fg-HAp) ceramics, which are characterized by gradations in crystallinity and the grain size of hydroxyapatite (HAp:Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2), were designed using bovine bone by the calcination and partial dissolution–precipitation method. The fg-HAp ceramics had macropores of 100–600 μm originated from spongy bone, and micropores of 10–160 nm. Fg-HAp ceramics loaded with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2/fg-HAp) were implanted into the subcutaneous tissue of rats. Eight weeks after the implantation, the surface and bulk degradations of the fg-HAp-containing body fluid occured, and small pieces of fg-HAp were incorporated into the induced bone and fatty marrow, suggesting that osteoinduction occurred in conjunction with bone remodeling. The rhBMP-2/fg-HAp ceramics developed could become a resorbable biomimetic material with fast bioresorption and osteoinduction characteristics.

Notes: 1. Arterial baroreflexes are suppressed in stressful conditions. Intense visual stimuli can cause a threatening sensation and produce defensive reactions.2. The present study was designed to determine whether and how electrical stimulation of the optic tract (OT) affects arterial baroreflexes, especially the heart rate component, baroreflex vagal bradycardia (BVB), in rats. In chloralose– urethane anaesthetized, β-adrenoceptor-blocked rats, BVB was evoked by electrical stimulation of the aortic depressor nerve.3. Electrical stimulation of the OT was found to not only increase blood pressure and heart rate, but also to inhibit BVB. To determine whether these responses were mediated by the lateral genticulate body and/or the superior colliculus, which are major target sites to which the OT projects, each was activated with electrical and chemical stimulation.4. The lateral genticulate body did not respond to either electrical or chemical stimulation, whereas the superior colliculus increased blood pressure and heart rate while suppressing BVB following electrical stimulation. Essentially similar responses were observed following microinjection of the GABA antagonist bicuculline methiodide.5. Optic tract-induced inhibition of BVB was abolished by bilateral destruction of the superior colliculus. Furthermore, this inhibition was also largely attenuated by destruction of the midbrain periaqueductal grey (PAG).6. In conclusion, electrical stimulation of the OT increases blood pressure, heart rate and inhibits BVB. These responses are not mediated by the lateral genticulate body but are mediated by the superior colliculus. The PAG may participate in the subsequent mediation of the responses to electrical stimulation of the OT and the OT-induced inhibition of BVB may contribute to expression of a light-induced defence reaction.

Notes: The permeability (P) and Diffusivity (D) of d-limonene vapor in nine polymeric sealant films were measured and compared at a vapor concentration of 0.719 mg/L over the range 25–45°C. The sorption of d-limonene (qs) was determined by a temperature programmed desorption (TPD) method. Equations to predict P and D for the different films were derived as a function of qs or temperature (Tmp) of differential scanning calorimeter measured melting points (DSCmp) of the films. Results indicated a tendency of test films with smaller values of qs and higher Tmp to have higher barriers against loss of d-limonene due to absorption.

Notes: Abstract. Bioabsorbable and functionally graded apatites (fg-HAp) ceramics were designed using calcined bovine bone (b-HAp) by the partial dissolution-precipitation methods. The fg-HAp ceramics with micro-pores of 10-160 nm had larger specific surface areas (30-40 m2・g-1) than theb-HAp ceramics, although the two HAp ceramics exhibited same macro-pore sizes of 100-600 µm and porosities of 60-80 %. Surface structure of these ceramics was modified by soaking at 309.5 K for 1-90 days in a simulated body fluid (SBF). At 8 days after the soaking, microstructure of the fg-HAp changed from small grains to dense cocoon-like ones by rapid precipitation of HApmicrocrystals, while at 14 days, that of the b-HAp was porous urchin-like grains, suggesting that the fg-HAp had higher bone-bonding ability than the b-HAp

Notes: Abstract The short range order structure of amorphous boron is studied. Three sample materials of different appearances, film, whisker and fibre, are prepared by chemical vapour deposition by the reduction of BCl3 with hydrogen. The reduced radial distribution functions (reduced RDFs) derived from their X-ray or electron diffraction patterns are found to be almost identical among the three samples. The reduced RDFs are compared with those calculated for the four crystalline modifications of boron, i.e.α-rhombohedral,α-tetragonal,β-tetragonal andβ-rhombohedral boron. The reduced RDFs of amorphous boron are found to be similar to those of theβ-tetragonal andβ-rhombohedral boron. From the similarity of physical and chemical properties and co-existence in deposition, the short range order structure of amorphous boron is shown to be closer to that of theβ-rhombohedral modification.

Notes: Abstract Ca2+-deficient hydroxyapatite (r-HAp) originated from cattle bones and stoichiometric hydroxyapatite (s-HAp) derived from reagents were prepared by wet syntheses. The adsorption characteristics of albumin (BSA) and lysozyme (LSZ) on the two HAp surfaces were compared by changing the heating temperature of the powders at 273–1073 K in a stream of water vapour. The saturated amount of adsorption (ASA(B) for BSA and ASA(L) for LSZ) on these HAp powders changed little at 273–673 K (Region I), but at 673–1073 K (Region II), clearly increased with crystallite size growth and transformation of crystal morphology. As far as the surface proportions of HAp for P- and C-adsorption sites (the ratios ASA(L)/ASA(B)) are concerned, r-HAp gave no change in Region I and decreased in Region II, whereas those for s-HAp were kept constant through all regions. The heats of LSZ adsorption, QL, for r-HAp and s-HAp, respectively, increased and decreased in Region II. These differences could be a result of the Ca2+-deficient structure of r-HAp with the OH−-vacancy and loosening surface structure due to segregation of impurities in Region II. r-HAp exhibited a 157% higher heat of BSA adsorption, QB, and a 60% lower QL in Region I than s-HAp. Conclusively, r-HAp can be used as an excellent adsorbent, rather than s-HAp, because of its chromatographic characteristics for the separation of acidic and basic proteins. © 1998 Chapman & Hall
