Notes: Abstract This review is devoted to discussion of hadron properties in the nuclear medium and their relationship to the partial restoration of chiral symmetry. Special attention is given to the difference between in-medium effects caused by conventional many-body interactions and those caused by change of the chiral condensate. In particular, we discuss medium effects on the Goldstone bosons (pion, kaon, and eta), the vector mesons (rho, omega, and phi), and the nucleon. Also, for each proposed in-medium effect the experimental consequences and results are reviewed.

Notes: This study examined the effects of density and growing season on growth and survival of juvenile lion's paw scallops (Nodipecten subnodosus) in Estero San Buto, a mangrove channel in Bahía Magdalena, Mexico. Scallops were kept in plastic mesh bags in oyster trays at three population densities (500, 1000 and 2000 organisms per tray, or low medium and high density respectively) over a period of 2 months from October to December 2001 and from February to April 2002. Growth (shell height increment) was measured every 7–12 days and mortality was evaluated at the end of the experiment (dead shell count). Overall growth was fast (0.24–0.38 mm day−1) in comparison with other pectinids. Significant differences were found for both, density and season, with faster growth occurring at lower densities and during the fall season when the water temperature was higher. Mortality was low (0.5–3.0% 60 day−1) except for the high-density treatment in the fall (44% 60 day−1). Crowding together with high water temperatures and increased metabolic oxygen demand of the scallops and possibly competition for food were the probable reasons for this high mortality. Overall, mortality was lower in the spring, when temperatures were lower, O2 values were higher and food was more abundant.

Notes: A ball grid array (BGA) is a surface-mount device and is processed in a standard surface-mount (SM) assembly line. However, there are some special features which make it different from other assemblies. The peculiarities of PCB layout, screen printing, placement, soldering, and inspection in BGA processing are presented. The failures of BGA assembly during ramp up and series production start-up are analysed in detail. An assembly quality better than 1dpm was achieved. The scale of repair is determined by the electrical quality of the devices. If small packages with higher pincount and better electrical performance are required, the µBGA is a sound choice. Compared with other high pincount packages with a small formfactor as TAB, flip-chip and chip on board, the µBGA may be processed in a standard SM assembly line. The results of µBGA-assembly feasibility studies are discussed.

Notes: Summary In a retrospective study, the extent of reactions of different types of prostatic carcinomas to external or interstitial radiotherapy was compared with reactions to hormonal therapy. It is shown that prostatic carcinomas of different grades of differentiation can be divided into two main subgroups with distinctly different survival rates; i.e., prostatic carcinomas grades of malignancy Ib/ IIa and grades IIb/III. Within an observation time of 10 years, the prostatic carcinoma grade of malignancy Ib/ IIa shows a good response to external and interstitial radiotherapy. None of the patients died of the prostatic carcinoma. In the more poorly differentiated prostatic carcinomas, 2 out of 11 patients with external radiotherapy died of the carcinoma. The death rates from disease after hormonal therapy were higher, and the survival times were very short without therapy. Regressive changes are much more distinctly expressed in the better-differentiated carcinoma group. Differential diagnostic difficulties between regressive changes in carcinomatous glands and normal glands could be resolved by immunohistochemical proof of high-molecular-mass cytokeratin in basal cells.
