Notes: We predict that singular photonic Bloch modes with extremely narrow bandwidths occur in dual-periodic dielectric multilayer structures. The electromagnetic field of these modes is shown to be strongly localized around the troughs of undulated periodic dielectric structures, which leads to an extraordinary high-Q value effect in the dual-periodic one-dimensional photonic crystals. We also propose several real systems suitable for experimental confirmation of the features predicted. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Optical properties of new polydiacetylene (PDA) crystals substituted with fluorobenzene derivatives have been investigated by reflectance, Raman, and electroreflectance (ER) measurements. The results indicate that these fluorobenzene-substituted PDAs have an intermediate optical character between those of the acetylene-type and butatriene-type PDA chains. One of these PDA crystals, DFMDP, has been found to show an exceptionally high crystalline quality, which has enabled us to make a detailed spectroscopic study. ER studies on this DFMDP crystal have revealed the charge–transfer(CT)-type exciton lying at ∼2.7 eV on the higher-energy side of the lowest 1Bu exciton at ∼2.2 eV. On the basis of experimental results, it is conjectured that two-photon resonance with the CT exciton plays a major role in the third-order nonlinear optical process in PDA chains.

Notes: A theoretical algorithm is presented for numerical calculation of quasimetallic reflection bands of molecular excitons by a unified model which takes account of exciton–intramolecular phonon coupling by the dynamical coherent potential approximation and the polariton effect (the directional dispersion effect) by an anisotropic dielectric tensor. This method is applied to analyze experimental quasimetallic reflection spectra of DCI (1-1'-diethyl 2-2'-cyanine iodide), TCNQ (tetracyanoquinodimethane), and CTIP [γ-cyclopropyl-bis(1,2,3'-trimethyl-indolenine-2-yl) pentamethinium tetrafluoroborate] crystals. From a comparison of experimental and calculated reflectivity spectra, important exciton parameters, such as the bandwidths and shapes of low dimensional density-of-states functions of excitons, have been estimated.

Notes: Reversible transitions between the two spectroscopically distinct phases (A and B phases) have been investigated for a new family of polydiacetylenes (PDAs) substituted with side groups of alkyl-urethane [−(CH2)4OCONH(CH2)n−1CH3@B:n=1−10]. Measurements of optical spectra as well as x-ray and calorimetric studies have revealed the first-order-like phase transitions in a series of PDAs with n=1–10 which are associated with an n-dependent thermal hysteresis ranging from 0 to 60 K in width. It has been found that the thermochromic changes become irreversible in all these PDAs once the hydrogen bond chains in the side groups are interrupted by heating beyond the polymer melting temperature.

Notes: Highly oriented polydiacetylene films have been fabricated by the vacuum deposition method using a new alignment technique. Details of the method are described, and optical and structural properties of typical oriented films of poly[dodecadiyne-1,12-diol- bis(n-butoxycarbonyl-methyl-urethane)][PDA-4BCMU] are reported.

Notes: The crystal structure of the as-prepared form of poly(5,7-dodecadiyne-1,12-diyl-bis-phenylurethane), customarily called TCDU, has been reexamined by an x-ray analysis. Bond lengths of the conjugated polymer backbone chain presently determined indicate that the structure of the as-prepared form of TCDU crystal is more close to that predicted for the acetylenic structure than the hitherto presumed butatrienic one.

Notes: Abstract We have experimentally observed the interaction of near-field light excited in a total internal reflection geometry with a periodic two-dimensional array of polystyrene spheres. The angular- and frequencyscanned attenuated-total-reflection (ATR) method was employed to observe the interaction. ATR spectra indicate that there is an easy axis and a difficult axis for the light propagation. When light is incident toward the easy axis, resonant dips appear in the ATR spectra. The experimental results were compared with those obtained by finite-difference time-domain analysis. The numerical results obtained by this method are able to explain a part of the experimental ones. Parts of the dips in the ATR spectra were considered to stem from propagating and whispering-gallery (WG) modes. That is, the propagation of the WG-modes over several spheres may enhance the coupling between the spheres and the incident light, and consequently may induce resonant structures in the ATR spectra.
