    Notes: To understand what kind of trophic factors are up-regulated in dopamine (DA)-depleted striatum, we first analysed the up-regulation of mRNAs using a DNA microarray in DA-depleted striatum where DAergic inputs were denervated by 6-OHDA. We then investigated whether or not such trophic factors had an effect on cultured dopaminergic neurons. The microarray analysis revealed that pleiotrophin (PTN), glial-derived neurotopic factor (GDNF) and others were up-regulated in DA-depleted striatum. As PTN has been reported to have a wide range of trophic effects on neurons, we focused on the functional role of PTN in the present study. The increase in PTN mRNA was confirmed by Northern blotting at 1–3 weeks after the lesion, reaching a peak at 1 week. In embryonic day 15 mesencephalic neuron culture, PTN increased the number of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) -positive neurons in a dose-dependent manner (125.2 ± 2.0% of the control at 50 ng/mL), while a family protein, midkine (10 ng/mL) did not show any trophic effect (99.3 ± 0.7%). In addition, the PTN effect on DAergic neurons was additive to the GDNF effect. As PTN did not increase the number of microtubule-associated protein-2 (MAP 2)-positive neurons or promote the proliferation of dopaminergic progenitors in a bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) labelling study, the effect appeared to enhance the specific survival of dopaminergic neurons. Expression of PTN receptors (syndecan-3, PTP-ζ) was detected on the cultured mesencephalic neurons, and also up-regulated in DA-depleted striatum. The data indicate that PTN is up-regulated in DA-depleted striatum and exhibits a trophic effect specifically on the survival of cultured dopaminergic neurons.

    Notes: Abstract We discuss the propagation of optical solitons in a monomode fiber as a model of long-distance-high-bit-rate transmission system. We give several new results which did not appear in our previous papers on this subject, such as (1) a derivation of the perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger equation from the Maxwell equation, (2) on the integrability of the perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger equation, (3) a discussion of the soliton as a stable fixed point of certain infinite-dimensional map generated by a transmission system with periodic excitations.

    Notes: Abstract Intensive meteorological observations were carried out at three sites along the slope of Adélie Land, Antarctica, with the goal of documenting summertime meteorological features of the katabatic zone. Three observational sites were placed at 5 km (D10), 110 km (D47), and 210 km (D57) from the coast, and frequency distributions of meteorological parameters were obtained at each site. Some meteorological features at D47 and D57 (interior sites) were different than at D10 (the coastal site); namely, mean air temperatures averaged for the whole observational period showed more pronounced diurnal variations at the interior sites than at the coastal site. These variations could be represented by sinusoidal curves. Wind speeds also showed diurnal variations, whose extremes appeared several hours later than the temperature extremes. The prevailing wind direction for all sites was southerly, about 30° east of the fall line, with small variations in wind direction. The strength and the height of temperature inversions were examined in two different layers (0 to 50 m, 50 to 300 m) at D47. A strong, shallow inversion layer formed at night, however, completely vanished during the day. On the other hand, an upper level inversion whose strength was weak persisted. The katabatic characteristics of the surface wind found at D47 in summer could be due to this upper level temperature inversion.

    Notes: Abstract A moment problem of Hamburger is studied to find a parametric Stieltjes measure from given moments. It is shown that if a deformation, or a dynamics, of moments is governed by a hierarchy of a Kac-van Moerbeke system, then the Stieltjes measure can be constructed explicitly by integrating a hierarchy of Moser's nonlinear dynamical system. The positivity of tau-functions is related to the existence of the Stieltjes measure at a deep level.
