Notes: Nigeria natural rubber concentrates in a newly synthesized antioxidant were added as conventional additives for normal natural rubber. The natural weathering, thermal and photooxidative protective performance of the adduct were examined by measurement of the carbonyl index and induction periods. From the results obtained, it is concluded that the addition of this new antioxidant in the form of masterbatch appears to be a better practical way of incorporating it into natural rubber simply by dilution of natural rubber. The bound stabilizers were found to be resistant to leaching.

Notes: 3,5-Di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl thioglycollate (DBHBT) was bound to the natural rubber (Hevea Brasilenisis) latex using 4,4'-azobiscyanovaleric (AZBN) acid-ferrous sulfate redox system. The degradation of various dilutions of the master batch as cast films under environmental influence has been investigated using spectroscopic method. Latex-bound DBHBT protects natural rubber latex against environmental degradation with an optimum concentration around 50%. The formation of C=0 groups by some pathways independent of —OH groups and allylic hydrogen atoms has been suggested in the natural weathering of DBHBT-modified and unprocessed natural rubber.

Notes: One class of polymer/additive which has become increasingly important is polymer blends. In this study the ultimate tensile strength, elongation at break, and the modulus of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, poly(vinyl chloride), polybutadiene and polystyrene and their blends have been studied over an entire binary composition range. We have correlated these mechanical properties to their degradation behavior under natural and accelerated weathering by measurement of various indices during thermal and natural weathering. It was found that during natural weathering the presence of polystyrene in acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) improved the weatherability of ABS; the converse was true when the blends were heated in an air oven at 100°C. It was also found that the weatherability of PB was improved in the presence of polystyrene and large improvement in the rigidity was observed. Similarly, from a measurement of carbonyl index, it was found that PVC has a stabilizing effect on PB. In many cases, the 50:50 composition of the polymers gave the best compromise of good mechanical properties, heat stability, and outdoor weathering. The mechanisms of possible interactions between the degrading polymers are discussed.

Notes: ABS masterbatch concentrates in antioxidants and UV stabilizers were added as conventional additives for normal ABS. The thermal and photo-oxidative performance of these polymers were compared with that of the commercial ABS and additives by measurement of carbonyl index and embrittlement times. From the result obtained, it is concluded that the addition of these additives in the form of masterbatches appears to be a better practical way of incorporating antioxidants and UV stabilizers into ABS simply by dilution of ABS, as these give thermal and light-stabilizing effects that cannot be achieved by stabilizers added in a conventional way. The bound stabilizers are resistant to leaching and chemical extraction.

Notes: Three types of additives for polymers have been studied in polystyrene and poly(methyl methacylate). The effects of a novel thermal stabilizer 3,5-ditertiarybutyl 4-hydroxybenzyl thioglycollate (DBHBT), zinc diethyldithiocarbamate (ZnDEC) have been compared with the commercial antioxidant Irganox 1076. It has been found that the new antioxidant was far more superior to the commercial antioxidant. It also acts as a peroxide decomposer. It also gave considerable synergistic effects with ZnDEC both under thermal and photo degradations. Its use is being recommended instead of the present commercial ones.

Notes: A number of common tropical timbers have been subjected to thermal analytical investigation as part of a wider research programme under air atmospheric conditions. Thermal parameters obtained were correlated with oven-dry densities of the timbers. Two well-defined pyrolysis stages have been observed which occur over the temperature ranges 201-426°C and 397-557°C. The kinetics of the thermal degradation of the timbers were obtained using Broido's analytical procedure. These results were interpreted on the basis of the known mechanism of pyrolysis and the calculated kinetic parameters were discussed within the context of other published values for cellulose.
