Notes: Concentrations of heavy metals Zn, Mn, Cu, Fe, Ni, Cr, Pb, Cd, Hg and Co were determined in surface waters, glacier ice and plant and animal materials from three regions in Spitsbergen, Svalbard. The concentrations of these metals in two samples of surface waters and in the vascular plants from Spitsbergen were found to be lower than what is commonly found in Cental Europe. Elevated concentrations were found in old ice from the surface of a glacier. The concentrations of heavy metals in algae were lower than in vascular plants. The concentrations of metals in the samples of feathers and animal hair from Spitsbergen were higher than what is common for Central Europe.

Notes: Abstract In the littoral of the lakes Titisee (FRG) and Neusiedler See (Austria) and in a backwater near Stockerau (Austria) two periphytic unicellular blue-green algae with rod-like cells have been found. They were formerly thought to be members of the exosporine generaChamaesiphon orCyanophanon. Now the alga from Titisee was studied in culture, particularly with reference to cell division, reproduction and ultrastructural cytology. Similarities with the genusSynechococcus are evident, but there is a small mucilaginous disc at the basis of the cells. Because of differences between this and all other known genera of unicellular blue-green algae, a new genus,Geitleribactron, with two species,G. periphyticum (= type species) andG. subaequale, is described.

Notes: Abstract The fine structure of the type species of the genusCyanothece Komárek 1976,C. aeruginosa, is described and compared with the main cytological characteristics of morphologically related members of the generaCyanobium, Cyanobacterium andSynechococcus. Several morphological features, such as cell walls with thick outer layers containing a special type of vesicles, position of thylakoids, “keritomy” (net-like appearance of protoplast caused by arrangement of thylakoids, net-like nucleoids and/or by tendency to form intrathylakoidal spaces) and a special structure of mucilaginous envelopes were found to be characteristic of this genus, supporting its separate position among coccal cyanoprokaryotes (cyanobacteria, cyanophytes). The taxonomic significance of ultrastructural features in all mentioned genera is discussed.

Notes: Zusammenfassung 1. 5. Neue Lokalitäten vonHomoeothrix janthina, H. varians, Chlorogloea microcystoides undChamaesiphon polonicus in der Tschechoslowakei undHomoeothrix crustacea, Chlorogloea microcystoides undCalothrix braunii in der UdSSR wurden festgestellt.

Notes: Abstract Ultrathin sections were studied in 2 strains and 2 samples from the nature of the genusChamaesiphon, representing 4 different species. Thylakoids are distributed mainly on the periphery of the cells, the cell-wall is probably 2-layered, and variable multilayered mucilaginous envelopes are developed around the cells. The cell division starts, as well as in otherCyanophyceae, by the invagination of the cytoplasmic membrane and of cell-wall layers into the protoplast; the mucilaginous envelopes—pseudovaginae—do not participate in this process but they form only the firm sheaths around the cells. The way of reproduction is, therefore, essentially the same as that described in other chroococcal Blue-Green algae (e.g.,Synechococcus), and the main difference is the polarized growth of theChamaesiphon cells. The taxonomical position of chamaesiphonoid algae is not as isolated as it was earlier supposed, the similarity withEntophysalidaceae is evident.

Notes: Abstract The dimension and variation range of terminal and intercalary cells, heterocysts, and akinetes of fourAphanizomenon taxa occurring in Czechoslovakia were studied. Statistical and graphical procedures were used for evaluation. With regard toA. flos-aquae, the results support the distinction of two varieties (var.flos-aquae and var.klebahnii). In the samples determined asA. gracile two clearly distinguishable morphological types could be found; one of them is recognized as a new species:A. flexuosum. Its diacritical features are established and problems of the intrageneric taxonomy ofAphanizomenon and its demarcation from the genusAnabaena are discussed.

Notes: Summary The genusDactylococcopsis Hansg. 1888 (Cyanophyceae) is based on the typeD. rupestris, which was later identified as a green algae. Most of the many species described later were also placed to other groups of algae. Several authors even doubted about the existence of the genus. As, however, some species of Cyanophyceae correspond to the original generic diagnosis, the name “Dactylococcopsis Hansg. ex R. et F.Chod. 1925” has been proposed as a nomen conservandum, and a new type (D. smithii R. et F.Chod.) has been defined. Further speciesD. linearis Geitl. 1935 and D.Planctonica Teil. 1942 has been unambiguously described till now.
