Abstract It has been established that the efficiency of the storage of energy in radical ions formed as a result of an electron-transfer photoreaction between complicated organic molecules in solution depends on the rate constants of the elementary steps of the reaction, the concentration of the electron acceptor, and the redox properties of the donor and the acceptor. Expressions for the concentration of the acceptor have been obtained theoretically, and expressions for the polarographic reduction potential of the acceptor have been found by means of numerical calculations. According to the latter, the energy stored will be maximal in two limiting cases: when the radical ions form as a result of the dissociation of either only singlet radical-ion pairs or only triplet radical-ion pairs, although they have a common dissociation channel.
