Notes: Abstract The effect of the age hardening on the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) of Cu-1·1 at% Ti single crystals was measured at 200 K. The dependence of the CRSS on the ageing time exhibits two maxima. This behaviour is connected with the change of the microstructure Cu-Ti alloy during the ageing. The comparison of the experimental values of the CRSS with the stress corresponding to the elastic stresses due to concentration modulations (Cahn [6]) shows that this spinodal strengthening is the major effect.

Notes: Abstract Hardening in modulated structure is evaluated using the periodic approximation. The critical shear stress incrementΔτ due to the periodic structure is calculated in the constant line energy approximation. The results are applicable to any periodic structure (concentration waves must be neither homophase nor symmetric) exerting on the dislocation local glide forces with an amplitude smaller thanγβ (γ denotes the line energy of corresponding straight dislocation directed along the concentration variations with the wave vectorβ). In the zero approximation, the critical forceΔτb is then simply the glide force on the straight dislocation averaged along its length in its most hardened position.

Notes: Summary Cadmium uptake by cultures of transformed hairy-roots of Solanum nigrum was studied. The effect of pH, buffer type, temperature, exposure time and Cd2+ content ranging from 0.2 to 2000 ppm was measured. Cd2+ uptake was dependent on increasing metal concentration and it was time dependent. From the variety of buffers tested, MES buffer and borate ions were found to be beneficial for the Cd2+ uptake. The high effectivness of Cd2+ accumulation in the roots decreased significantly after increasing the Cd2+ content in the buffer over 2 ppm.
