Notes: Optically induced gratings have been created in Bi4Ge3O12 single crystals doped with Fe and Mn impurities. The writing kinetics of the holograms depends on the previous illumination with ultraviolet (UV) light, λ=310 nm. It has been concluded that there is a photorefractive contribution due to Fe impurities ([Fe]=2.7×1017 atoms/cm3) which can be observed when the holograms are written with 457.9 nm light. This contribution is essentially independent of the previous UV illumination, the steady state diffraction efficiency η of a 633 nm He-Ne laser beam is ≈2×10−4, and the corresponding modulation of the refractive index Δn at λ=633 nm is ≈4×10−6. The UV illumination induces a transient behavior of the diffraction efficiency with ηmax≈8×10−4, this regime is dominated by the photorefractive effect. After this maximum, η decreases to ≤0.3×10−4 and a quasi steady state is reached; in this steady state regime the contribution of a photochromic grating dominates the value of η. Mn-doped samples ([Mn]=4.3×1017 atoms/cm3) also show the transient behavior and the photochromic contribution.

Notes: Summary  We determined the prevalence of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCAs) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and evaluated the correlation between ANCA positivity and clinical features. Forty-one patients with SLE and two control groups were examined. One of the control groups consisted of 15 patients with systemic vasculitis, and the other of 12 healthy blood donors. A quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique was used to measure the serum cytoplasmic ANCA (cANCA) and perinuclear ANCA (pANCA) levels. cANCA positivity was found in three patient samples, and pANCA positivity in 10 SLE patients. The occurrence and titres of both ANCA types in SLE patients were similar to those in healthy controls and significantly lower than those in patients with systemic vasculitis. The clinical picture and antibody profile were similar in ANCA-positive and ANCA-negative SLE patients. We conclude that measurement of ANCAs does not provide any additional diagnostic or prognostic data in SLE.

Notes: A convenient and fast method to determine the composition of LiNbO3 single crystals consisting of a measurement of the position of the fundamental absorption edge in the near UV region is refined and extended to the stoichiometric range. Using unsophisticated apparatus and simple reflection correction, the proposed two-parameter calibration equation provides an absolute accuracy of 0.1 mol % with the relative accuracy reaching an unusual value of better than 0.01 mol % for near stoichiometric compositions. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: During termination of a twin-pregnancy by saline injection, for a psychiatric indication 20 per cent saline was injected into one amniotic sac and the chloriede concentration in both amniotic fluids was recorded by separate cannulation of the amniotic cavities. Changes in chloride concentration of the maternal serum and fetal heart activity were continuously observed. The fetus in the treated sac died and was born macerated, whereas the other showed signs of life at the delivery. The results show that the composition of the amniotic fluid may change significantly by paraplacental transfer.

Notes: Total water content and chloride concentration were measured in embryo, placenta and decidua from 90 early human pregnancies. The total water content of the embryo and placenta is greater than that of the decidua, and decreases with increasing gestational age. The chloride content of the decidua, placenta and embryo, and by implication the extracellular fluid space, does not change between the fortieth and ninetieth days of pregnancy.

Notes: In 21 pregnancies in which therapeutic abortion was induced by intra-amniotic hypertonic saline injection in the second trimester of the pregnancy, the moment of fetal death and the maximum hypertonicity of the amniotic fluid were established. Comparing these with each other and with the onset and the duration of the abortion process, a close correlation could be found only between the time till death of the fetus and the hypertonicity of the amniotic fluid.

Notes: The functional role of VR1, which we and others have recently identified on several epithelial and mesenchymal human skin cell populations, was investigated in the human hair follicle (HF), as a prototypic epithelial–mesenchymal interaction system. VR1 immunoreactivity was confined to distinct epithelial compartments of HFs in anagen and catagen, while dermal papilla fibroblasts and HF melanocytes were VR1 negative. In organ culture, VR1 activation by capsaicin resulted in a dose-dependent and VR1-specific inhibition of hair shaft elongation, suppression of proliferation, promotion of apoptosis, and induction of catagen transformation, possibly due to upregulation of a potent hair growth inhibitor TGFβ2. Cultured outer root sheath (ORS), as well as HaCaT, keratinocytes also expressed functional VR1, whose stimulation inhibited proliferation, induced apoptosis, and elevated intracellular calcium concentration. Finally, VR1 stimulation of cultured ORS keratinocytes upregulated the expression of recognized endogenous hair growth inhibitors (IL-1β and TGFβ2) and downregulated the expression of stimulators (HGF, IGF-1, and SCF), while key differentiation markers (CK17, CK14, filaggrin, and involucrin) remained unaffected. In conclusion, VR1 is a significant novel player in human hair growth control underscoring that its physiological functions in human skin far extend beyond sensory neuron-coupled nociception.

Notes: We have studied the expressions of various protein kinase C (PKC) isoenzymes in T cells and monocytes from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), in comparison to those of healthy controls and patients with other immunological disorders. As measured by Western blotting, the levels of PKCβ, δ, η, ε, θ and ζ (but not of PKCα) significantly decreased in T cells of SLE patients. In monocytes, however, we observed marked suppressions only in the expressions of PKCδ, ε and ζ but not in the expressions of other PKC isoforms. In vivo corticosteroid application, as well as in vitro steroid treatment of monocytes, elevated the expressions of most isoforms close to normal values; however, the decreased levels of PKCθ and ζ were not affected by steroid application. These alterations were characteristic to SLE because we could not detect any changes in the PKC levels in mononuclear cells of primary Sjögren's syndrome and mixed connective tissue disease patients. These results suggest that impaired PKC isoenzyme pattern may exist in the T cells and monocytes of SLE patients. Furthermore, the clinically efficient glucocorticoid application in SLE can increase the expression of some members of PKC system.

Notes: Rhythmic changes were observed in the quantity of radiolarians and calpionellids preserved in an Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous deep water succession in the Bakony Mountains of Hungary. Statistical analysis revealed that for short periods (order of 100 kyr) the correlation of the two planktonic groups is negative. Over longer time intervals definite trends are recognized, which can be explained by the combined effect of facies transition, evolution of the calpionellids and rhythmic environmental (climatic) changes. Spectral analysis and time span calculations indicate that orbital forcing in the Milankovitch frequency band influenced the observed changes.

Notes: Abstract: Using isolated cells from a spontaneously immortalized human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT) loaded with Fura-2 the regulation of intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) was studied. The continuous presence of ATP induced a biphasic response in high external Ca2+. The first component reflected the release of calcium from intracellular stores since it was present after the removal of external calcium with ethylene-glycol-bis-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid (EGTA). The second phase of [Ca2+]i increase was not detectable in the absence of external calcium and raising the extracellular [Ca2+] increased the rate of rise in [Ca2+]i suggesting that it was influenced by the external environment. Furthermore, after adenosine triphosphate (ATP) had emptied the intracellular store in a calcium-free milieu, the elevation of external Ca2+ induced a secondary increase in [Ca2+]i that did not require the presence of ATP. Depleting the intracellular calcium store with a Ca-ATP-ase inhibitor (cyclopiasonic acid, 10 μM) also induced calcium entry. The depletion induced calcium entry was inhibited by econazole (100 μM). These findings indicate the presence of a calcium release activated calcium influx pathway in HaCaT keratinocytes.
