Description / Table of Contents: Abstract
Notes: Abstract Surface chromium (II) on silica is coordinated by two ≥SiO groups in cis position. Adsorption of ammonia and amines leads to stable (≥SiO)2CrL2 and further to unstable (≥SiO)2CrL4; reflection spectra suggest pseudo square planar and pseudo octahedral structures respectively for these complexes. Formation of the six-coordinate species depends on the type of the amine.

Notes: On Surface Compounds of Transition Metals. XL. Characterization of Chromium Doped Silica Catalyst Systems of the Phillips Type by Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Analysing System (SEM/EDS)The surface of typical supports for the Phillips catalyst was studied by SEM. The seemingly smooth surfaces are composed by closely packed, ball-shaped substructures; macro- and micro-pores can be seen. Adherent particles on the surface (φ ≪ 1 μm) show the same substructures as the usual surface. After impregnation and activation/reduction of the catalysts crystallites are seen at the surface, which are characterized as Cr2O3 by their crystal shape and EDS analysis.Polymerization of ethylene occurs at the usually doped surface, while the Cr2O3 particles do not exhibit a special activity. Mechanically inforced breaks of the catalyst grains show the formation of threadlike polyethylene with diameters of 200 to 300 nm.

Description / Table of Contents: Chromium oxide doted aluminium silicate catalysts, used in the polyethylene synthesis by the Phillips process, can be prepared in efficient form only by adsorption of Cr(III) or Cr(VI) compounds in aqueous acid medium. During drying in air at elevated temperatures, change of the chromium compound occurs („activition“), and a surface compound of oxidation number + 5.6 ± 0.2 is formed which is soluble in acid. Another part of chromium is insoluble and in the +3 state. The atomic ratio of these parts, which gives the overall oxidation number of the contact, and its dependence on the Cr concentration, temperature, oxygen pressure, and activitation time is investigated.

Description / Table of Contents: On Surface Compounds of Transition Metals. VIII. Complex Formation of a Coordinatively Unsaturated CrII Surface Compound with Nitrogen OxidesN2O forms with surface-Cr(II) a relatively unstable light blue compound of the stoichiometry 1:1, while addition of NO results in formation of a very stable dark brown, diamagnetic surface complex . By reaction with O2 this complex undergoes  -  depending on reaction temperature  -  either replacement of NO unter reoxidation of the metal (→Cr(VI)) or/and reaction of the ligand (→NO2). Direct reaction of NO2 with results in the same products as stepwise addition of NO and 1/2 O2. reacts with HCl/ROH under formation of the soluble, paramagnetic kation [Cr(NO)(ROH)n]2+, which is formulated as [Cr(II)(NO)]2+ ↔ [Cr(I)(NO+)]2+ accordingly to the e.s.r. spectra.
