    Notes: The dispersion of transient electromagnetic waves in a homogeneous medium can be characterized by expressing either the complex permittivity as a function of frequency or the susceptibility kernel as a function of time. In this paper, a time domain technique is used to derive a nonlinear integrodifferential equation which relates the susceptibility kernel for a one-dimensional homogeneous slab to the reflection operator for the medium. Thus, the susceptibility kernel (which is a function of time) can be determined from reflection data. A numerical implementation of this technique is shown. The more general case of a medium consisting of a stack of homogeneous dispersive layers is also addressed.

    Notes: This is the first part of a series of papers devoted to direct and inverse scattering of transient waves in lossy inhomogeneous media. The medium is assumed to be stratified, i.e., it varies only with depth. The wave propagation is modeled in an electromagnetic case with spatially varying permittivity and conductivity. The objective in this first paper is to analyze properties of the scattering operators (impulse responses) for the medium and to introduce the reader to the inverse problem, which is the subject of the second paper in this series. In particular, imbedding equations for the propagation operators are derived and the corresponding equations for the scattering operators are reviewed. The kernel representations of the propagation operators are shown to have compact support in the time variable. This property implies that transmission and reflection data can be extended from one round trip to arbitrary time intervals. The compact support of the propagator kernels also restricts the admissible set of transmission kernels consistent with the model employed in this paper. Special cases of scattering and propagation kernels that can be expressed in closed form are presented.

    Notes: The direct scattering problem for an inhomogeneous lossy medium is examined for the one-dimensional case in which the phase velocity profile is discontinuous at the boundaries of the medium. Scattering operators (or impulse responses) and propagation operators are defined and equations that govern their behavior are developed. Knowledge of the scattering kernels for one round trip in the medium implies that the scattering kernels can be determined on any time interval. Numerical examples are presented. It is also shown that this scattering problem is reducible to one in which there are no phase velocity mismatches. This reduction provides considerable numerical advantage in the solution of the direct scattering problem. The inverse problem is examined in a companion paper.

    Notes: The one-dimensional inverse scattering problem for inhomogeneous lossy media is considered. The model problem involves electromagnetic wave propagation in a medium of unknown thickness with spatially varying conductivity and permittivity. Two inversion algorithms are developed in the time domain using data obtained from normally incident plane waves. These algorithms utilize reflection data from both sides of the medium, and one of them also uses transmission data. These algorithms are implemented numerically on several examples, one of which includes the effects of noisy data. The possibility of using one-sided reflection data and no transmission data is reviewed and analyzed.

    Notes: Dry diets containing either fish meal (C-FM) or dried fermented fish silage and soybean meal blend (1:1, ww−1) (C-FS) as the sole protein source, were fed to triplicate groups of juvenile Clarias gariepinus (10.8 ± 0.3 g) at 5% body weight per day for 70 days. Catfish fed the C-FS diet showed reduced (P 〈 0.05) growth rate, feed conversion, protein efficiency and digestibility. Lower amounts of available amino acids in the C-FS diet resulted in inferior nutritive value for catfish growth than in the C-FM diet. Postprandial changes in plasma amino acids showed similar patterns in both diet treatments, but the maximal mean levels attained for the C-FS diet were correspondingly lower and occurred earlier than with the C-FM diet. There were no effects of feeding C-FS diet on the hepatosomatic index but carcass analysis showed that body protein deposition was lower (P 〈 0.05). Differences in haematocrit, haemoglobin content and liver histology were demonstrated but were not pathological. Lower digestible energy of C-FS diet also contributed to the poor performance of catfish in this treatment. Results of this study indicate that C. gariepinus cannot metabolize protein from co-dried fish silage as efficiently as fish meal protein when used as the sole dietary protein.

    Notes: Bodykidney tissues (the medial parenchyma of the kidney) of silver carp from lakes with high mortality on the outskirts of Berlin were histopathologically studied. Changes found in the excretory tissue were hyperaemia and dilatations of glomeruli, as well as hyaline droplets and vacuolar degeneration of cytoplasm in the eithelial cells of the nephron. The intestitial tissue of the bodykidne repeatedly responded with oeiemae and a roliferation of granulocytes. Neither parasitological nor bacteriological, virological nor toxicologicar noxae have been found to be the cause for pathological change. It is assumed that unfavourable food conditions and other stress factors may be responsible for this kidney diseases.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Zusammenfassung Histopathologische Untersuchungen an Rumpfnieren von Silberkarpfen (Hypophthalmichrhys molitrix Val.) aus Seen der Berliner UmgebungAus einigen Seen der neuen Bundesländer der BRD, in denen gehäuftes Silberkarpfensterben auftrat, wurden die Rumpfnieren dieser Fischart unter histopathologischen Aspekten untersucht. Als Veränderungen des exkretorischen Gewebes wurden Degenerationen der Nierenkörerchen sowie hyalintropfige und vakuoläre Degenerationserscheinungen im Zytolama von Tubuisepithelzellen vorgefunden. Im interstitiellen Rumpfnierenparenchym traten wieierholt Ödeme und Granulozytenproliferationen auf. Da bisher weder parasitologische noch bakteriologische, virologische und toxikologische Noxen in direktem Zusammenhang mit den pathologischen Veränderungen gebracht werden konnten, werden wahrscheinlich Mangelernährung und andere Streßfaktoren für die Insuffizienz der Nierenfunktion verantwortlich zu rnachen sein.
