    Notes: SUMMARY 1. A biomanipulation experiment was carried out in a small (10 ha), but relatively deep (17 m) and highly eutrophic lake in northern Poland. The lake had been stocked in 1996, 1997 and 1998 with a variety of piscivorous fish (pike, catfish, trout and pikeperch), in order to reduce numbers of cyprinid planktivores.2. Piscivore stocking was associated with a threefold decrease in the offshore fish density (night echosounding). Despite this reduction, the large planktonic cladoceran, Daphnia hyalina, remained scarce, whereas the density of small-sized zooplankton increased greatly.3. The lack of demographic response in D. hyalina was probably due to the anoxia in the hypolimnetic refuge of this vertically migrating species. The anoxic hypolimnion, below 3–4 m depth, was inhabited day and night by numerous Chaoborus flavicans larvae.4. Changes in zooplankton were associated with shifts in the taxonomic composition (from single-cell green algae to filamentous cyanobacteria), size structure (from nano- to net phytoplankton) and seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton, but not in the average biomass of planktonic algae. A clear-water phase, which was absent in the prestocking years, developed in spring, with Secchi depth reaching 2.5 m, a value which had never been recorded in the 20 years preceding the biomanipulation. In general, the lake's status was switched from hypertrophic to eutrophic.5. Deteriorating food conditions, resulting from qualitative changes in the phytoplankton community, combined with predation pressure by the remaining fish and Chaoborus larvae were associated with the ultimate elimination of D. hyalina from the lake.

    Notes: Abstract Lake Łuknajno, a shallow (max. depth 3 m) and relativelylarge(630 ha) water body situated in the Great Masurian Lakessystem(Poland) is strongly affected by its agricultural watershed.Thetotal volume of drainage waters pumped into the lake in 1993amounted 2.84 × 106m3 which is equivalentto65% of the lake volume. In spring and autumn drainage waterswereextremely rich in nitrogen (especially nitrates) and the N:Pratioreached 57 in spring. In summer, drainage waters containedrelatively more phosphorus so the N:P ratio decreased tonearly 10.Nutrient concentrations in lake water followed the changes ininflowing waters. High concentrations of nitrates and ammoniawerenoted in lake water in spring but summer concentrations oftheseions were close to zero. Soluble reactive phosphorus variedbetween10 and 20 µg P l−1 throughout the season. A constantoutflow of nitrogen to the lower Lake Śniardwy was assumedbased ona permanent concentration gradient between waters of these twolakes.Lake Łuknajno is a hard water lake. Co-precipitation ofphosphorus with calcium carbonate is likely to occur though nosignificant P accumulation in bottom sediments was found.Sorptionof phosphorus on sediments as measured under experimentalconditions has minor effects on P cycling. Bottom sedimentscomposed mainly of calcareous gyttja do not accumulate eitherorganic matter or mineral forms of nutrients.

    Notes: Abstract Data for comparison are from 17 dimictic and four polymictic lakes interconnected to form a system of the Great Masurian Lakes. Both summer epilimnetic total phosphorus and chlorophyll were higher in dimictic than in polymictic lakes. Chlorophyll was probably not limited either by phosphorus or by nitrogen in shallow lakes. Utilization of phosphorus in terms of chlorophyll:particulate phosphorus and chlorophyll:particulate nitrogen ratios was similar in the two groups of lakes. Significant differences were found, however, in the chlorophyll:seston ratio, higher in dimictic lakes. These observations together suggest that seston in shallow lakes contains a significant, though unpredictable contribution of detritus/mineral particles much poorer in phosphorus than those in dimictic lakes. Secchi disc depth was better explained in shallow lakes by seston variability than by chlorophyll. Thus, algal production in shallow masurian lakes seems to be limited by light conditions resulting from resuspension of non-living particles while the production in deep lakes is nutrient (both nitrogen and phosphorus) limited.

    Notes: Abstract Sedimentation at the Krutynia River inflow to Lake Kujno was closely related to hydrological regime. The highest sedimentation rates, recorded in spring, decreased during summer by two orders of magnitude. Granulometric segregation of settling seston along the inflow zone was related to differentiation of phoshorus content. Smaller particles were richer in P, producing a gradient of increasing P concentrations in the settling material. A substantial loss of P from polyphosphate and various organic fractions was found after settlement of river suspensoids. Mechanisms of P losses are discussed and possibilities of P retention within the inflow zone are considered.

    Notes: Abstract Waters of Lake Łuknajno (623 ha, 3 m max. depth postglacial basin in Masurian Lakeland) are of meso-eutrophic type in spite of an intensive land impact and substantial phosphorus loading. The reason of this peculiarity is an abundance of 4 species of charophytes (Chara aculeolata, C. aspera, C. contraria and C. tomentosa) which dominate the submerged vegetation of the lake and yielded 417 g m-2 dry biomass in summer 1991. The plants have high potential for phosphorus uptake and accumulation as was checked in laboratory experiments. Due to this potential Chara can outcompete planktonic algae in mixed cultures at different mineral P supplies.
