    Notes: It is shown that a longitudinal CO2 laser with two discharge tubes electrically coupled in parallel can be operated in pulsed mode without ballast impedance. This scheme not only yields much higher efficiency (up to 13% at the maximum output energy) and eliminates component failure at high pulse repetition frequency (prf) but also facilitates short pulse availability. In the absence of ballast, current and laser pulse width decrease on increasing the voltage applied to the discharge tubes but these quantities remain unaffected on varying the value of the energy storage capacitor. This enables an independent control of the laser pulse duration and energy. Threshold energy for the onset of nonuniformities in the glow discharge reduces almost exponentially on increasing the discharge current pulse duration but rises on decreasing the operating value of E/N, the electric field to neutral gas density ratio. The maximum output laser energy of about 1 J/pulse, adjustable pulse duration from 30 μs to about 2 ms, and prf up to 50 Hz have been obtained.

    Notes: A different type of longitudinal CO2 laser is developed with multisegment hollow cathode discharge that sustains at low voltages. Operation of this laser is investigated with a 400-V peak ac source obtained directly from a three-phase line using inductive ballasts. Output laser pulses of 2 ms FWHM, 3-W peak power and repetition frequency of 100 Hz are obtained from an active length of about 45 cm at an operating pressure of 12 mbar (CO2:N2:He=1:1:10). The specific output power can be increased by improving cooling of the active medium.

    Notes: Abstract A cw CO2 laser, coupled with an astigmatism free beam focussing mirrors arrangement is used for processing a brittle plastic, CR-39 without producing cracks, vents or chips. The processing is based on the formation of volatile products of laser-induced decomposition in the plastic. Threshold fluence for the decomposition (found to be independent of the power density and beam residence time) in CR-39 atλ=10.6μm is determined to be 25 J cm−2 and the decomposition threshold power density for cw irradiation 2.1±0.5 W cm−2. The depth and width of the tapered laser processed region are observed to increase with power density and beam residence time. The widths attain a steady state value of ∼ 1 mm at beam residence time above 65 ms, for a fixed power density (2.5×104 W cm−2) and sheet thickness (250 μm). Taper angle of the edges decreases with increasing power density and/or beam residence time. The heat affected zone (measured in crossed polarisers) around the processed region is found to extend with increasing beam residence time but remains unaffected on changing power density. The results are discussed in terms of the optical and thermophysical properties of CR-39 and the parameters of the interacting laser beam.
