Notes: The surface area and luminal structures of the pineal sac were studied during the prespawning, spawning, and postspawning phases of control and gonadectomized fish, Mystus vittatus, throughout the year. From the later half of prespawning to the first half of postspawning phases the values for the surface area were lower in the gonadectomized group whereas from the later half of the postspawning to the first half of prespawning phases the values were higher than in the control group. The acidophilic cell bodies were visible in the first half of prespawning and at the end of spawning phases as well as during the postspawning phase. In the control group sulfated acid mucopolysaccharides and mucoid basophils with gamma substances were faintly stained during the early months of the reproductive cycle in contrast to the experimental group; but in the later months these substances were strongly stained in both groups except in the gonadectomized group at the end of postspawning phase. The pineal lumen was narrow during the pre- and postspawning phases and wider in the spawning phase of the gonadectomized group in comparison to control; this may be related to the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. Thus, the morphohistochemical changes in the pineal organ of fish were evident in both groups during the prespawning, spawning, and postspawning phases.

Notes: Abstract This study reviews the value and benefits of the dorsal lumbotomy incision (DL) for exposure of the pelviureteric junction (PUJ) in infantile and paediatric pyeloplasty. Ninety-one children underwent pyeloplasty for confirmed PUJ obstruction between January 1993 and December 1997. The conventional loin incision (CL) (n = 60) was used as the standard, to which DL (n = 31) was compared. Information on the duration of surgery, length of hospital stay, length of time to return to full oral intake, and complications was obtained retrospectively from the hospital chart. The results were analysed using a non-parametrical statistical analysis. Follow-up was between 6 months and 5 years (median 2.4 years). The median age at surgery was 1.5 years (1 month–14 years). The median operating time was similar in both groups (95 min). The median length of stay was 3 days for the DL group compared to 7 days for the CL group (P 〈 0.001). The length of hospital stay had no correlation to the patient's age at surgery or the type of postoperative analgesia used. The median time to return to full oral intake and unrestricted activity in the DL group was 43 h compared to 83 h for the CL group (P 〈 0.001). The surgeons found that there was better exposure of the PUJ in infants in the DL group compared to the DL incision. There were no operative complications related to the DL itself. At the time of last follow-up 3 children required re-operation for a failed pyeloplasty, 2 in the DL group. The results suggest that DL is a safe and reasonable alternative to CL in paediatric pyeloplasty and probably the incision of choice in infantile pyeloplasty.

Notes: Abstract Three cases of pseudocysts occurring after splenectomy are presented. Sonography and computed tomography were helpful in diagnosing the pseudocysts as well as providing guidance for subsequent drainage. Demonstration of a cystic mass adjacent to the tail of the pancreas following splenectomy suggests the diagnosis of postsplenectomy pseudocyst and has important implications for clinical management.

Notes: Abstract Pyrophyllite mineral was heat treated with alkali and alkaline-earth metal carbonates in equimolar ratios at 1000 °C for 2 h and the various phases formed in the sintered products were investigated using X-ray powder diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. The morphology of the products was studied using scanning electron microscopy. In each case formation of aluminosilicate phase of respective cation was observed, but the presence of mullite in sintered products was not detected.

Notes: Abstract This paper evaluates the miscibility syndrome in order to predict the occurrence of miscibility gaps in the binary alloy systems of lithium, sodium, and potassium and compares its predictions with those from the Hildebrand, the Kumar-Hildebrand parameters or the concept of Mott number. It is shown that statistically, the predictions from the miscibility syndrome are most reliable. An attempt is also made to partially rationalize the nature of the binary liquid systems in terms of the electronic configuration of the valency electrons.

Notes: Abstract Alloys containing 17, 30, 38 and 60 at. % cadmium were examined in the range 300 to 600° C by the Kumar-Samarin technique of centrifuging liquid metals. Whereas smooth concentration gradients were set up in the first three alloys, thus indicating stability, the 60 at. % cadmium alloy decomposed into two liquids. Regarding the solution as colloidal, the sizes of predominantly lead- and cadmium-rich clusters were determined in the first three alloys and found not to change appreciably with temperature.

Notes: Abstract The paper shows that concepts of neither the Hildebrand parameter nor the Mott number are adequate to predict the occurrence of miscibility gaps in binary metallic systems. It shows that modified versions of these parameters which are closely integrated with the structure of liquid metals (now called the Kumar-Hildebrand and the miscibility syndrome respectively), statistically account for the occurrence of miscibility gaps. Whereas no rigorous and theoretical justification could be given, it is shown that miscibility in liquid binary metallic systems could be discussed in terms of the electronic configuration of valency electrons.

Notes: Abstract The Kumar-Samarin technique of centrifuging was adopted to study the structure of aluminium-silicon alloys in terms of the concept of the existence of clusters in liquid state. The investigation shows that in hypo-eutectic alloys the clusters are denser than the monatomic matrix whilst in hyper-eutectic alloys they are lighter. It is suggested that this difference in the distribution of silicon in liquid state could account for the difference in the solidification behaviour of hypo- and hyper-eutectic alloys.
