    Notes: Peanut agglutinin (PNA) has previously been shown to be a ‘marker’ for early T subpopulations in mice. We have investigaied whether it could also be used in the study of human mononuclear cells. 50–60% of human thymocytes have binding sites for PNA. When separated on a discontinuous Ficoll gradient, the PNA-positive thymocytes are found preferentially in the layers corresponding to the immunoincompetent cells. In the peripheral blood only 5% of the mononuclear cells are PNA-positive and we have shown that these cells are monocytes. In tonsils 13% of PNA+ cells are found and they are mostly lymphocytes. Thus, PNA is a marker for some T cell subsets present in the thymus and tonsils.

    Notes: We report a case of lichen planus pemphigoides. Immuno-electron localization of G-immunoglobulin and C3 showed that in the peribullous zone these were in the lamina lucida, as in typical bullous pemphigoid, but in the bulla itself they were along the floor, and not along the roof as in bullous pemphigoid. We conclude that bullous pemphigoid antigen and lichen planus pemphigoides antigen have different localizations.

    Notes: Abstract This study demonstrates the adhesion and growth of bovine corneal epithelial cells on the surface of a new hydrogel. The hydrogel, containing 78% of water and 22% of AN-69 polymer (poly(acrylonitrile-sodium methallyle sulfonate)), was obtained by phase inversion of polymer–dimethylformamide solution in physiological saline (0.9% NaCl). Experiments were also carried out using hydrogel treated with arginine, human albumin and collagen IV. Covering of hydrogel samples by epithelial cells was completed within ten days, with good cell viability. The epithelial cells spread out and formed a consistent cell layer, confirmed by immunocytochemistry experiments against cytokeratins. Transmission electron micrographs showed numerous desmosomes between cells and the presence of some membrane differentiations at the cell/hydrogel interface. This study suggests therefore that the hydrogel might be suitable for the development of artificial epikeratoplasty grafts.

    Notes: Summary Fixed doses of K and increasing doses of Ca and Mg in different proportions were added to a senile latosol. The resulting cationic nutrient potentials were correlated with the uptake of these cations by tomato and with the cationic ratios in the plant material. Highly significant correlations were found between the nutrient potentials pK-0.5pCa, pK-0.5pMg, pK-0.5p(Ca + Mg) and pCa-pMg on one hand and the respective logarithms of K/Ca, K/Mg, K/Ca + Mg, and Ca/Mg in the plant material, on the other hand. Soil samples taken before planting showed higher correlation coefficients than did samples taken after harvesting. The valuesΔpCa andΔpMg, being the differences in nutrient potential between soil samples taken before and after the growth period, correlated significantly with the corresponding totals of absorbed ions.

    Notes: We examine the simplest homogeneous azeotropic distillation sequence of industrial relevance, where an entrainer is added to a binary azeotrope to recover both azeotropic constituents as pure products. Despite its apparent simplicity, such distillation columns can exhibit an unusual behavior not observed in zeotropic distillation: For some mixtures, separation as a function of reflux goes through a maximum. At infinite reflux, no separation is achieved.In some cases, achieving the same specifications with a larger number of trays requires a larger reflux.Sometimes the only feasible separation yields the intermediate component as a pure distillate, while the bottom product contains the light and heavy components.Sometimes the only feasible separation yields the intermediate component as a pure bottom product while the distillate contains the light and heavy components.While these unusual features can be regarded as curiosities, they are essential for proper entrainer selection and design. For a minimum boiling azeotrope, the existing and conflicting entrainer selection rules state that one should use a component that introduces no distillation boundary between the azeotropic constituents (Doherty and Caldarola, 1985), and either a low or high boiling component that introduces no additional azeotrope or a component which introduces new minimum boiling azeotropes (Stichlmair et al., 1989). By taking advantage of the curious aforementioned features, as well as our experience involving more than 400 mixtures, we have been able to analyze the assumptions behind these criteria, show when those assumptions break down, and therefore understand the limitations of the criteria.

    Notes: A new high-water-content (78%) anionic polyelectrolyte hydrogel was obtained by phase inversion (demixion) of a polymer solution containing 9.0% poly(acrylonitrile sodium methallylsulphonate), 85.0% dimethylformamide, and 6.0% saline solution (0.9% NaCl). The hydrogel is permeable to water, saline, urea, creatinine, glucose, human albumin, and saline-dissolved oxygen. Investigation of the interactions between human serum and surfaces prepared with the new yielded hydrogel, compared to serum interaction with silica-free silicone (RTV), regenerated cellulose (Cuprophan), MMA/PVP copolymer (Lidofilcon), PMMA (Perspex), PTFE (Gore-Tex), and poly(acrylonitrile sodium methallylsulphonate) hemodialysis membrane (AN-69), showed the hydrogel and hemodialysis membrane (both prepared with AN-69 copolymer) to be the only materials devoid of complement (C′)-activating ability. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
