Notes: Abstract: Gliosis is commonly observed in the CNS following tissue damage, and it also occurs in aging and in many neurodegen-erative diseases. Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) accumulation is a prominent feature of astrocytic gliosis. An inhibition or delay in GFAP synthesis could mitigate scar formation and thus reduce the formation of a physical barrier. The consequence of this would be to allow neurons and oligodendrocytes to reestablish a functional environment. (—)-Deprenyl, a specific monoamine oxidase (MAO) B inhibitor, has been used as an effective antipar-kinsonian drug, and it has been reported to possess neuroprotective and neurorescue properties. Using northern and slot blots to detect GFAP mRNA in C6 glioma cells, we have demonstrated that (—)-deprenyl decreases the abundance of GFAP mRNA in a time- and dose-dependent manner. The effect seems to be specific to MA0 B inhibitors because (+)-deprenyl and clorgyline exhibit no effect. This study indicates therefore that (-)-deprenyl may be useful for regulating astrogliosis following CNS injury as well as in some neurodegenerative diseases.

Notes: Abstract: Northern blot hybridization was performed to detect aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase (AADC) mRNA in primary cultures of astrocytes and C6 glioma cells. The cDNA probe for rat AADC was generated by reverse transcription from rat adrenal gland total RNA and was amplified by the polymerase chain reaction method. AADC mRNA from cultured astrocytes and C6 glioma cells was present as a single band, 2.2 kbp in size, that comigrated with the RNA from rat kidney. Western immunoblot showed a single protein band at 52 kDa for AADC enzyme protein. These findings demonstrate that AADC is expressed in rat glial cells.

Notes: Abstract: The effect of some selective monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors on aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase (AADC) gene expression in PC12 cells has been examined. Irreversible MAO B inhibitors [(–)-deprenyl, pargyline, and MDL 72,974A] stimulated AADC gene expression, whereas a selective irreversible MAO A inhibitor (clorgyline) and a reversible MAO B inhibitor (Ro 19-6327) had no effect. Because there is no apparent MAO B activity in PC12 cells, it is postulated that there is a novel site of action for these MAO B inhibitors and that the pharmacological profile of this site matches that of neuroprotective MAO B inhibitors. Finally, it is suggested that the stimulation of AADC gene expression may be relevant to the antiparkinsonian effects of MAO B inhibitors.

Notes: Based on Phillips' electronegativity theory [Rev. Mod. Phys. 42, 317 (1970)] we have determined the alloy scattering potential for the ternary nitrides, Ga1−xAlxN, In1−xGaxN, and In1−xAlxN, and hence the 300 and 77 K electron mobilities through a variational principle calculation. Alloy scattering is important in In1−xGaxN, and In1−xAlxN, both of which show a significant composition "bowing'' in electron drift mobility, even at 300 K. This contribution is not important in Ga1−xAlxN. Acoustic phonon scattering is also significant at 300 K, in contrast to the situation obtained in GaAs-based ternaries. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: AlN intended for metal-insulator-semiconductor applications has been prepared by laser activated chemical vapor deposition from ammonia and trimethylaluminum precursors. The films are high-density polycrystalline with 〈100〉 preferential orientation, and there is no evidence of the presence of Al2O3. A consistent band gap of 6.00±0.03 eV is obtained for film thickness in the range 0.3–1.2 μm. Conductivity is below 5×10−14 Ω−1 cm−1 at room temperature and is thermally activated with a range of excitation energies between 0.6 and 0.8 eV. The breakdown electric field is about 3×106 V/cm, while the relative permittivity varies between 7.8 and 8.2 in the frequency range 100 Hz–13 MHz.

Notes: The correlation deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) method is developed for insulator/semiconductor interface studies. Trap transient modeling indicates that the energy range in which the trap transients can contribute to the DLTS signals of the correlation method is about 12 kT, and is much wider than that of the boxcar method (several kT). Moreover, large voltage pulse for saturation will cause the capacitance transient to shift away from the ideal exponential due to the sum of the various emission rates. Hence, the equations for determination of interface trap density suitable for the boxcar method is invalid for the correlation method. For this reason, an equation for determining the interface trap density suitable for the correlation method is derived. The interface trap density determined by this method agrees well with other methods.

Notes: Based on the Büttiker dephasing model, we propose an analytical scattering matrix approach to the long-range electron transfer phenomena. The present efficient scheme smoothly interpolates between the superexchange and the sequential hopping mechanisms. Various properties such as the drastic dephasing-assisted enhancement and turnover behaviors are demonstrated in good agreement with those obtained via the dynamical reduced density-matrix methods. These properties are further elucidated as results of the interplay among the dephasing strength, the tunneling parameter, and the bridge length of the electron transfer system. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Two classes of spherically symmetric solutions to the empty space Einstein equations in even dimensions are presented. The solutions are constructed as radial extensions of circle bundles over a compact homogeneous Kähler manifold M. Type B solutions can be turned into higher-dimensional Kaluza–Klein monopoles. Both the Gross–Perry–Sorkin solution and the Bais–Batenburg solutions are contained as special cases of the general solutions.

Notes: This work reports our meso mechanical study of microcrack behavior, especially the process leading from microcracking to macro failure. Using laser loading with a duration on the order of nanoseconds, spallation in a cylindrical geometry was achieved in soda-lime glass at the microcrack evolution stage. Laser induced shock waves were used to conduct crack initiation experiments for the first time. The specimens were examined after experiments and were compared with those loaded by conventional static and dynamic methods. A meso scale failure model of nucleation, growth, and percolation (NGP) is suggested based on the experiments. The NGP model is characterized by a randomly generated microcrack field and by simultaneous percolation statistics in time iteration. In most existing damage models, the statistical average of microcracks over a finite space is required in order to evaluate the damage variables. This procedure is not necessary in the NGP model. We show that the connection of microcracks can be very complicated, possibly a self-organized process. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
