Notizen: Summary In order to obtain information about physiological and homeostasic responses at the Maximal Intensity of Endurance of the 45 min “Square-Wave Endurance Exercise Test” (MIE45), three arterial blood samples were taken: (a) at rest; (b) at the 45th min of the SWEET; (c) after 15 min of recovery, to measure paO2, paCO2, [H+], [Hb], and [lactate] in 14 normal male subjects: four trained (T) six well trained (WT) and four others untrained (U). Total mechanical work (TMW) corresponding to MIE45 was significantly higher (x ± SEM) respectively in WT (9.22±0.65 kJ·kg−1, p〈0.001), than in T (7.17±0.18 kJ·kg−1, p〈0.01) and U subjects (4.44±0.36, p〈0.001). Because of this the lactate level, which rose significantly during exercise, differed between U and WT subjects (p〈0.05). In spite of the exhaustive character of the MIE45, [H+] and paO2 remained within the range of normal values. These results suggest that trained and untrained subjects can be trained with the exhausting MIE45 exercise while maintaining a constant [H+] and paO2 at the 45th min of exercise.

Notizen: The ZnO-, TiO2-, and CdS-photocatalyzed oxidations of an amorphous ethylene-propylene copolymer (EP copolymer) containing 75% w/w of ethylene are described. In solid films exposed under polychromatic (λ 〉 300 nm) or monochromatic (λ = 365 nm) UV light, it is observed that the introduction of pigment (0.5-5% w/w) strongly modified the course of the photooxidation of a transparent sample. Ketonic and lactonic groups accumulate in the polymer matrix without being converted photochemically into acidic, ester, and vinyl groups. In the kinetic study it is pointed out that the variations of the rate of formation of carbonyl groups depend on the nature of the pigment. With highly photoactive pigments (ZnO and untreated TiO2 RL11A), the rate is at first a decreasing function of the pigment percent, then an increasing function. With poorly photoactive pigments (treated TiO2 RL90 and CdS), the rate of formation of carbonyl groups is a decreasing function of the pigment content. It is therefore emphasized that, at a low pigment content, the inner filter effect prevails over the photocatalytic influence with any pigment. It is also observed that the rate of formation of vinyl groups, photoproducts formed from the excited ketones, is a monotonously decreasing function of the pigment content. The complete inhibition of the ketone photochemistries is observed with ZnO in conditions in which the light is not absorbed by the pigment, suggesting that the carbonyl groups formed are adsorbed on the pigment.

Notizen: The influence of two photoactive pigments (ZnO and TiO2 in the rutile form) on the dual photochemistry occurring in polydodecanamide was analyzed, on analytical and kinetics grounds. Variations in the concentration of amino, hydroperoxide and imido groups as function of the photoactive pigment content were studied. At wavelengths longer than 300 nm, zinc oxide exhibits an inner filter effect at low content; an antagonist photocatalytic influence is observed at high content (5-10%). The inner filter effect and the photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide are observed simultaneously even at low content of titanium dioxide (1-10%). At 254 nm and 25°C, the filter effect of ZnO is prevalent on the formation of amino and acidic groups. Titanium dioxide acts as a filter and a photocatalyst: the formation of amino groups is inhibited, whereas the rate of formation of acidic groups is apparently not modified.

Notizen: The present paper reports on analytical aspects of the ZnO photocatalyzed oxidation of linear and cyclic alkanes. Normal and branched hydrocarbons were examined as models in the photoageing of both polyethylene and polypropylene, respectively. IR, GC-MS and chemical analyses confirm the formation of hydroxyl and carbonyl groups and ascertain the presence of γ-lactones in the photooxidation of polyolefins. In the presence of ZnO as pigment, ketone groups accumulate and no acidic groups are observed. The formation of γ-lactones is favoured in substituted aliphatic alkanes like 2,4-dimethylpentane and 2,2,4-trimethylpentane, i.e. in molecules where methyl groups are in β-position of a tertiary carbon atom. A mechanism of the formation of γ-lactones in photooxidation of both model alkanes and polyolefines is proposed.

Notizen: Direct evidence of the TiO2 and ZnO photocatalytic decomposition of tert-butyl hydroperoxide and atactic polypropylene hydroperoxides in solution is reported. Molecular and macromolecular hydroperoxides behaved similarly. Untreated TiO2 in the rutile form was a far more efficient photocatalyst than ZnO in solution; the photoactivities of both pigments were limited on preferential absorption sites. In the solid state no preferential reaction sites were observed. When added to preoxidized atactic polypropylene both pigments were photocatalysts of the formation of macromolecular hydroperoxides and of their decomposition. The photoreactivities of untreated TiO2 and ZnO varied less than in solution.
