Notes: Abstract Irshell, a mid-infrared echelle spectrograph developed through a collaboration between the University of Texas, the University of California Space Sciences Laboratory, and Hughes Aircraft, has been in regular use for astronomical observations for about five years. It is optimized for high spectral resolution (R∼10,000) observations of narrow spectral regions (Δλ/λ∼1/300) and compact sources (a few arcsec), and is sensitive in the 5–25 μm region. A wide variety of astronomical objects have been studied. Observing techniques have been developed to achieve maximum sensitivity in those observations for which Irshell is best suited and to allow observations of wide spectral regions and extended objects. We discuss the observing techniques and show some of the data obtained.

Notes: [Auszug] New infrared and submillimetre spectroscopic measurements of the gas dynamics in the central 10 pc of our Galaxy make a convincing case that the mass distribution at the centre of the Galaxy is more concentrated than a spherical isothermal stellar cluster. The measurements fit a point mass of ...

Notes: [Auszug] The centre of a galaxy attracts attention, because of its unique location and often intense activity. It also poses two outstanding puzzles. The first concerns the source of the enormous power in the form of radiation and high velocity gas pouring out of the centres of some galaxies. Second is how ...

Notes: Abstract We present spectroscopy of the molecular shock in the supernova remnant IC 443. The H2 level populations in IC 443 are nearly identical to Orion Peak 1 (Brand et al. 1988; Parmar et al. 1994) and are consistent with a partially dissociative J-shock. The similarity with Orion suggests the shock processes which dominate the emission in both regions are essentially identical.
