Notizen: Background: We have shown that 4 days of quadruple therapy after omeprazole pre-treatment is an effective therapy for curing H. pylori infection. In this study we investigated whether this regimen would maintain the high cure rate during long-term follow-up. Some recent studies have reported high recurrence rates after apparent cure. Apparently not all methods to test for cure have sufficient sensitivity to pick up small numbers of residual bacteria. This study also served to investigate whether our methods to test for cure 5–6 weeks post-treatment were reliable. Methods: All patients from a previous study were invited to return for a 14C-urea breath test and serology. A representative group of 37 patients (76%) returned for a urea breath test and serology. The mean follow-up was 14.7 months (range 11.4–23.6 months). Results: None of the 37 patients had a positive urea breath test result. IgG antibody titres fell steadily in all patients, showing a mean decrease of 83% at the end of the follow-up. None of the patients showed an increase in titre. Reinfection was therefore 0% (0 of 37). Conclusion: Four days of quadruple therapy seems to be an effective therapy for the eradication of H. pylori as evidenced after long-term follow-up. Our biopsy methodology is reliable in identifying treatment failures 5–6 weeks post-treatment.

Notizen: Background.Omeprazole enhances the efficacy of bismuth-based triple therapy. It is unknown whether the same is true for other proton pump inhibitors. Lansoprazole has superior anti-Helicobacter activity in vitro and possibly also in vivo; therefore we investigated quadruple therapy with lansoprazole. Materials and Methods. In two studies performed in separate hospitals, a total of 67 Helicobacter pylori–positive patients were treated with 7-day quadruple therapy (lansoprazole, colloidal bismuth subcitrate, tetracycline, and metronidazole) after 3 days of lansoprazole pretreatment. Testing for cure was done by endoscopy in study 1 and by breath test in study 2. Results.Cure rates per protocol were 31 of 31 (100%) in study 1 and 30 of 32 (94%) in study 2. Intention-to-treat cure rates were 31 of 35 (89%) in study 1 and 30 of 32 (94%) in study 2. Cured overall were 32 of 34 with a metronidazole sensitive strain and 3 of 3 with a metronidazole-resistant strain. Data on side effects were collected from 51 patients. Twelve (21%) had no side effects, 27 (53%) had mild side effects, 10 (20%) had moderate side effects, but only 2 (4%) had severe side effects. Side effects, never were the reason that a patient stopped taking the medication. Conclusions. The results with lansoprazole-quadruple therapy are comparable to the historic control group treated with omeprazole-quadruple therapy. The cure rate is very high, and although mild to moderate side effects occured in many patients, everybody finished the treatment regime.

Notizen: The purpose of this research is to prepare high solute permeability membranes for hemodialysis by plasma depositing hydrophilic monomers onto chemically treated or O2 plasma etched Nylon 4 substrate. The factors that affect the performances of membranes, such as deposition conditions and chemical or plasma etching conditions, were studied. The monomers used in this study were 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (VP), 2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and Methyl methacrylate (MMA). The permeabilities of NaCl, urea, vitamin B12, and albumin were measured, as were the water content, hydration, diffusivity, partition coefficient, and protein adsorption ratio of fibrinogen to albumin by membrane surface of plasma deposited membranes. The permeabilities of NaCl, urea, vitamin B12, and albumin of HEMA 5 w-1 h plasma deposited onto chemical treated Nylon 4 membranes were 2.896 ± 0.192, 3.301 ± 0.325, 0.010 ± 0.007, and 0.000 x 10-5 cm2/min, respectively. The mole ratio of adsorbed fibrinogen to adsorbed albumin (F/A) is 0.26 ± 0.05, which is much lower than that of the pure Nylon 4 membrane (0.94 ± 0.06) and the Gambro® membrane (0.90 ± 0.15). The HEMA deposited membrane possesses the highest feasibility as hemodialysis material among those plasma deposited membranes considered.

Notizen: This study was to improve the performances of nylon 4 membranes for washing waste-water treatment of nuclear power plants, e.g., removal of detergent and salt by membranes. The effects of the degree of grafting and ionization on the reverse osmosis performances of acrylic acid (AA)-grafted nylon 4 membranes by γ-ray irradiation modification were investigated. The relationships of operating conditions, such as feed concentrations of salt and detergent, operating temperature, and pressure, and the performances of water flux and solute rejection of the prepared membranes were obtained. Water flux of the prepared membranes was highly sensitive with the operating temperature. It was found that an increase in the operating pressure could increase the water flux and the impaction effect directly. Water flux and salt rejection were significantly improved by both ionized and nonionized AA-grafted nylon 4 membranes compared to ungrafted nylon 4 membranes. Water flux increased rapidly and solute rejection dropped off slightly as the grafted membranes were ionized. The 100% detergent rejection could be obtained by the nonionized AA-grafted nylon 4 membranes with 38.6 and 69.6% degrees of grafting under various operating conditions. Results obtained showed that these modified nylon 4 membranes were usable for washing waste-water treatment of nuclear power plants. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: For dehydrating separation aqueous alcohol solution by the pervaporation technique, a chemical modified poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) (TPX) membrane was synthesized with 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP). The morphology, crystallinity, and thermodegradation properties were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray, and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. The modified TPX membrane possessed higher stability than that of the unmodified TPX membrane. The effects of feed temperature and poly(4-VP) (P4-VP) content of the modified TPX membranes on the performances of pervaporation were studied. A separation factor of 133 and a permeation rate of 115 g/mh can be obtained for the TPX/P4-VP membrane with 3.0 wt % P4-VP content. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Carbon fiber are surface treated by oxygen, argon, and styrene plasma to study the effects on fiber strength and interfacial shear strength with PPS resin. Interfacial shear strength between carbon fiber and high melting temperature thermoplastic resins is successfully measured with the microbond pull-out test with the help of scanning CO2 laser beam which solved the difficulties in preparing PPS microspheres. Tensile tests show that etching by oxygen plasma and deposition with plasma-PS increase strength of the fibers in some cases. ESCA spectra deconvolutions demonstrate that the improved interfacial strength is strongly related to the hydroxyl, ether, or aromatic groups on the surface. On the other hand, hydrocarbon segments are detrimental to the interface. Surface area and roughness have little influences on the interfacial strength of carbon fiber/PPS composites.

Notizen: To enhance the degree of grafting, homografting copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) onto nylon 4 using a chemical initiator has been attempted. The factors that affect the grafting copolymerization are the concentration of reactants, reaction time, and temperature. The dialysis permeabilities of solutes, water content, surface energy, mechanical properties, and blood compatibility of the membrane were investigated. Under the same reaction conditions, the degree of grafting by the homografting method is remarkably higher than of the heterografting method for the nylon 4-HEMA grafting system. The dialysis permeabilities of NaCl, vitamin B12, and ovalbumin of the homografted membrane with a 14.8% degree of grafting are 2.760, 0.392, and 0.073 × 10-5 cm2/min, respectively. These permeabilities are higher than the corresponding ones of ungrafted nylon 4 membrane. The mol ratios of adsorbed fibrinogen/albumin (F/A) of the heterografted membranes were found to decrease from 0.53 to 0.33, and the surface energy, to increase from 40.6 to 46.4 dyn/cm with the degree of grafting in the range of 12.5-29.9%, and their relationship is not remarkable for the homografted membranes for which the mol ratios of F/A are about 0.22-0.32 with the degree of grafting in the range of 14.8-103.8%. Observed from scanning electron micrographs of the membrane surface, denseness was found to be important to improve blood compatibility. Based on the dialysis permeabilities of solutes and the blood compatibility observed in this study, the homografted nylon 4/HEMA membrane can be considered as a hemodialysis material.

Notizen: By adjusting the casting conditions, the oxygen permeabilities of poly(4-methyl-pentene-1) (TPX) membranes prepared in this study are in the range of 2.91-7.14 × 10-9 cm3(STP) cm/cm2 s cm Hg and permeability ratio of O2/N2 between 2.7 and 4.4. To increase O2—N2 selectivity, the vinylpyridine is γ-ray irradiation-grafted onto the substrate-TPX membrane. The factors that affect the structure and performance of the grafted membrane considered are: tightness of substrate, kind of solvent for grafting monomers, irradiation conditions, total irradiation dose, and operating temperature and pressure. The O2/N2 selectivities of grafted TPX membranes are significantly improved comparing to that of nongrafted TPX membranes. For example, an O2 permeability of 35.6 × 10-10 cm3(STP) cm/cm2 s cm Hg and an O2/N2 permeability ratio of 7.5 for the grafted membrane can be obtained.

Notizen: To improve the hydrophilicity and enhance the transport flux of nylon 4 membrane for dialysis, this study attempts to utilize blending nylon 4 with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The instability of PVA in water can be obtained more easily than by other methods, such as chemical, γ-ray irradiated crosslinking, or high-temperature treatment used by previous researchers. The effects of maturation time of the casting solution, nylon 4/PVA ratios, and casting solvent compositions on esterification of PVA, salt permeability, water content, partition coefficient, diffusivity, and mechanical strength of membrances are studied. The membrane, prepared by casting solution of nylon 4/PVA = 9/1 wt % formic acid with 24-h maturation time, possesses permeabilities of NaCl and urea, 33.14 and 19.67 × 10-5 cm2/min, respectively.
