Notes: The glass-transition temperatures (Tg's) and specific heats (Cp) of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and PVC plasticized with 5-120 phr di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (DOA) and tri(2-ethylhexyl) trimellitate (TOTM) have been determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Measured Tg's were compared to predictions by the Couchman and Karasz (C-K) thermodynamic theory, three related empirical equations, and a new equation obtained from the C-K relation by assuming the product TgΔCp to be constant. It was found that the Tg's of the PVC/TOTM mixtures are adequately predicted only by the C-K and the derivative relation. The Tg's of the PVC/DOA mixtures follow a sigmoidal or cusp-like dependence on plasticizer composition as has been observed for some other PVC/plasticizer mixtures. In this case, the approximation afforded by the C-K or derivative equations is still superior to the empirical models over a wide composition range. Dynamic mechanical analysis of the PVC/DOA mixtures suggests that the DSC transitions may consist of two overlapping phase transitions. The reported sigmoidal composition dependence of the DSC Tg's may therefore result from the measured Tg's being weighted towards the temperature corresponding to the predominant dynamic mechanical transition (i.e., the high Tg phase at low plasticizer concentrations and the low Tg phase at high plasticizer concentrations). In such cases of partial phase separation, the C-K or the derivative equation may be used to estimate the composition of the two phases at each overall plasticizer concentration.

Notes: Various types of polyethylene homopolymers and copolymers, including linear high-density polyethylene (HDPE), branched low-density polyethylene (BLDPE), poly(ethylene vinyl acetate) copolymer (EVA), heterogeneous linear poly(ethylene/α-olefin) copolymer (het-LEAO) or commonly known as linear low-density polyethylene, homogeneous linear poly(ethylene/α-olefin) copolymer (hom-LEAO), and homogeneous branched poly(ethylene/α-olefin) copolymer (hom-BEAO), were evaluated for their melt rheological and thermodynamic properties with emphasis on their molecular structure. Short-chain branching (SCB) mainly controls the density, but it has little effect on the melt rheological properties. Long-chain branching (LCB) has little effect on the density and thermodynamic properties, but it has drastic effects on the melt rheological properties. LCB increases the pseudo-plasticity and the flow activation energy for both the polyethylene homopolymer and copolymer. Compared at a same melt index and a similar density, hom-LEAO has the highest viscosity in processing among all polymers due to its linear molecular structure and very narrow molecular weight distribution. Small amounts of LCB in hom-BEAO very effectively reduce the average viscosity and also improve the flow stability. Both hom-LEAO and hom-BEAO, unlike het-LEAO, have thermodynamic properties similar to BLDPE. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The phenomenalogical and theoretical aspects of secondary electron emission due to ion bombardment in the keV energy range has been reviewed and a comparision of this process with secondary electron emission due to electron bombardment has been made. The similarities and differences between the contrasts in the secondary electron images of test specimens studied with both scanning microfocused Ga+ beams and electron beams have been explained by the mechanisms of the secondary electron emission processes. From ion induced secondary electron images information on the topography, material and crystallographic nature of specimens can be obtained with high surface sensitivity. Differences in surface potential on different areas of a specimen has also been shown to result in voltage contrast effects.
