Notes: Virtual assembly (VA) is an important application for virtual reality (VR) technology inmanufacturing industries that can supply an effective solution to actual assembly problem ofproducts. According to the assembly characteristic of large-scale products such as airplane, rocket andsatellite, etc, a new interactive VA environment system is constructed, and its architecture and relatedkey techniques are studied. Considering human free activity in the system, a free-walking perceptionmachine is developed. And a stereo projection approach based on a video generator is proposed toenhance real-time interaction and reduce hardware cost. Finally, those key techniques are successfullyapplied in the process of satellite assembly planning and training

Notes: Due to the worldwide competition of manufacturing industry and the development ofvirtual reality (VR) technology, virtual assembly (VA) has attracted many researchers to reducedevelopment cost and improve product quality. As a typical application of VR in engineering, VAhas become increasingly important for modern industry. In this paper, a survey of research progressabout VA is analyzed. The conception and architecture of VA are introduced at first, theclassification is also presented, then the main research contents and key techniques are discussed, finally the limitations and future works are pointed out

Notes: Due to complex process and high difficult operation for large-scale products assembly, theapplication of virtual assembly (VA) has an important significance and also an actual value. In thispaper the key techniques of VA for large-scale complex products are proposed, and their assemblycharacteristics (such as their organization form, human participation, process planning andoptimization and so on) are analyzed. First, a new virtual environment (VE) system consideringhuman activities is set up. Second, an integration approach is realized to transform data from CAD toVA system, and a hybrid method on the basis of virtual reality (VR) and intelligent algorithm isapplied to optimize and evaluate assembly process planning. Moreover, assembly documentsgeneration and Web training for assembly workers are implemented. Finally, an application case ofthe VA system for a complex product is given, and further work is pointed out

Notes: Due to big structure and complex process for some large-scale products (such as planesand rockets), the workers have to try many times and move around in the products to accomplishthe assembly operations for high-precision requirements. Thus, the efficiency is low and the cost ishigh in the assembly process. To deal with that, the virtual assembly (VA) system for large-scaleproducts is developed in this paper. First a new VA environment considering human activity is setup, and then a hierarchical assembly process list (HAPL) model and a dynamic constraintrecognition algorithm is proposed to realize exact placement for large-scale products in VA system. Finally, the method is verified by the development VA system which successfully applied in theprocess of satellite assembly. Moreover, the method can be used in the common VA systems forassembly planning
