    Notes: The process of organomineralization is increasingly well understood with respect to modern carbonate sediments accumulating adjacent to tropical reef atolls and reef caves. Mineralization related to non-living organic substrates results in autochthonous micrite production (‘automicrites’). ‘Automicrites’ are the main constructive element of Lower Cretaceous (Albian) carbonate mud mounds in northern Spain. These slope mud mounds occur within transgressive and early highstand system tracts encompassing several macrobenthic ecological zones. They are clearly separated from the biocalcifying carbonate factory (Urgonian carbonate platforms), in both space and time. Within these build-ups, most ‘automicrites’ were initially indurated and accreted to form a medium-relief growth framework. ‘Automicrites’ have a uniform, presumably high-Mg-calcite precursor mineralogy. They show an inorganic stable-isotope signature (∂13C around +3·3‰) within the range of early marine cements, and skeletal compounds lacking major vital effects. Epifluorescence microscopy shows that they have facies-specific fluorescence, which is similar to skeletal compounds of Acanthochaetetes, but clearly different from allomicritic sediment and cements, which are mostly non-fluorescent. The EDTA-soluble intracrystalline organic fraction (SIOF) of Albian automicrites shows an amino acid spectrum that is similar to shallow subsurface samples from their modern counterparts. Gel electrophoresis of the SIOF demonstrates an exclusively acidic character, and a mean molecular size range between 20 and 30 kDa. Experiments in vitro (inhibition tests) indicate that the SIOF has a significant Ca2+-binding capacity. Fluorescence and chemical characteristics of SIOF point to a main substance class, such as humic and fulvic acids, compounds that form from pristine organic matter during early diagenesis. Biomarker analyses provide evidence for the crucial role of biodegradation by heterotrophic microorganisms, but no biomarker for cyanobacteria has been found. Primary sources of organic material should have been manifold, including major contributions by metazoans such as sponges. It is concluded that many carbonate mud mounds are essentially organomineralic in origin and that the resulting fabric of polygenetic muds (‘polymuds’) may represent ancestral metazoan reef ecosystems, which possibly originated during the Neoproterozoic.

    Notes: The world's first time-of-flight (TOF) 3D range camera without moving parts, based on a custom solid-state imaging device is described in this article. With the single exception of the smart-pixel array, only electronic and optical standard components are used. The range camera does not need any mechanically scanning parts. It acquires 10 range images per second and achieves a resolution of a few centimeters over a distance range of 10-20 meters for non-cooperative targets. The illumination source consists of 160 LEDs, modulated at 20MHz, with a total optical power of about 800mW. The description of the smart pixel's working principle and the presentation of our first 3D measurements are completed with a discussion of the theoretical limitations and a comparison with the system performance.

    Notes: Summary Electron microscopy studies were made on tissues of cyclic hematopoietic (CH) dogs of various ages presenting a high incidence of spontaneous amyloidosis. The distribution and morphologic characteristics of amyloidosis in this animal model closely correspond to the secondary and familial forms of the disease in humans. Plasma cells and, particularly, macrophages presented marked changes during the evolution of amyloid deposition. Residual bodies in the macrophages contained abundant cell debris, a result of both endocytic and autophagocytic activities. Intracellular amyloid fibrils were not observed by conventional electron microscopy. A few reticular cells contained intracytoplasmic fibrils which were morphologically different from amyloid. There was no correlation between the amount of intracellular fibrils and the size of the extracellular amyloid deposits. On the contrary, a temporal association between the magnitude of the amyloid deposits and cytoplasmic changes in the macrophages at sequential stages of the evolution of the disease was evident. It is suggested that the hematopoietic defect in the CH dog could play an important role in the production of amyloidosis, making this animal an excellent experimental model for studies of that disease.

    Notes: Abstract The formation of quasi-multicellular bodies of Treponema denticola was analysed using different electron microscopical methods. These bacteria could develop four different conformations: (i) normal helical forms; (ii) twisted spirochetes, forming plaits; (iii) twisted spirochetes, forming club-like structures; (iv) spherical bodies in different size. Treponemes within spherical bodies, plaits, and clubs proved to be enclosed in a common outer sheath in which the normal arrangement of their axial flagella was lost. The development of the quasi-multicellular bodies starting from the monoforme spirochetes was elucidated and this morphogenetic process is illustrated by a schematic drawing. Factors which might be involved in the induction of the structures are discussed and their possible pathogenetic importance is considered.

    Notes: Abstract We studied the effects of the calcium-channel blocker, nifedipine, on solid and liquid phases of gastric emptying in 10 healthy male volunteers. Each subject underwent a dual-isotope radionuclide gastric emptying determination with and without the preadministration of nifedipine, 30 mg orally, given 20 min prior to ingestion of the test meal over 10 min, following which the subject lay supine under the gamma-counter for 2 hr. Blood samples for measurement of plasma nifedipine concentration were obtained at the time of drug administration and every 30 min throughout the gastric emptying determination. There was a threefold variation in the areas under the plasma nifedipine concentration vs time curve (AUC) obtained in these 10 subjects. Percent gastric retention of either the liquid (water) or the solid (chicken liver) marker was not significantly different after 30 mg oral nifedipine, as compared to the nontreatment day. We concluded that plasma nifedipine concentrations previously reported to be associated with significant esophageal motility effects in humans were not associated with effects on gastric emptying of either liquids or solids.

    Notes: Abstract We studied the effect of morphine and naloxone on lower esophageal sphincter pressure, esophageal contraction amplitude, and gastric emptying of solids and liquids in ten normal healthy subjects. Morphine sulfate in a dose of 8 mg intravenous bolus significantly decreased sphincter pressure with a maximum fall of 22.8% of the basal tone. Naloxone, 5 mg intravenous bolus, resulted in a 20% increase in the baseline pressure. There was no change in the esophageal contraction amplitude, duration, or frequency of peristalsis with either morphine or naloxone. Gastric emptying was measured using a dual-isotope technique to simultaneously asses the emptying rates of both solid and liquid meal components. Morphine, 8 mg intravenous bolus, led to a significant inhibition (P〈0.05) of the gastric emptying of both solids (99mTc sulfur colloid-labeled chicken liver) and liquids (111In DTPA-labeled water). Naloxone, 5 mg intravenous bolus, accelerated the gastric emptying of both solid and liquid components, but this did not achieve statistical significance. These observations suggest that: (1) morphine's inhibitory effect on gastric emptying and lower esophageal sphincter pressure may contribute to its potent emetic properties; (2) the human lower esophageal sphincter and stomach may have opiate receptors and further investigations should be addressed to determining if endogenous opiates play a role in the modulation of sphincter pressure and gastric emptying in humans.
