    Notes: Zusammenfassung Es wird die Kontinuums-Theorie der Dislokationen benützt, um den plastischen Fluss in Einkristallen zu beschreiben. Dabei wird angenommen, dass das dynamische Verhalten der Dislokationen durch ein System von Tensorflüssen zusammen mit Konstitutionsgleichungen für die Dislokationsgeschwindigkeiten und für die Produktionsgeschwindigkeiten positiv-negativer Dislokationspaare beschrieben werden kann. Erhaltungssätze verknüpfen die Dichteänderungen der Dislokationen mit den Divergenzen der entsprechenden Ströme, und die Ströme bestimmen auch die plastische Verformungsgeschwindigkeit. Auf diese Weise erhält man eine Plastizitätstheorie, welche nur von mikroskopischen Parametern abhängt. Falls lange geradlinige Dislokationen vorherrschen, lassen sich die Erhaltungssätze ohne weiteres gewinnen, und die Beschreibung ist vollständig, sobald die beiden genannten Konstitutionsgleichungen gegeben sind. Ist aber die Dichte der Versetzungsschleifen gross, dann muss ein neuer Satz von Grössen eingeführt werden: die Dichte der Ecken an Dislokationslinien. Es wird der Fall einfacher kubischer Kristalle untersucht, und es wird gezeigt, dass es in den Erhaltungsgleichungen sechs Eckendichten gibt. Die Arbeit beschränkt sich nicht auf kleine Verzerrungen, Dislokationsdichten oder materielle Geschwindigkeiten.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary A partial differential equation is considered whose dominant linear term involves third order time derivatives and which contains a nonlinear term multiplied by a small parameter. The solutions of initial-boundary-value problems for the equation are investigated using an extension of the Krylov-Bogoliubov-Mitropolskii asymptotic method. The vibrations of a viscoelastic rod lead to an equation of the type considered when the material constitutive relation is that of a standard linear solid together with additional small nonlinearities of behaviour, and this particular physical problem is investigated in detail. It is shown that under appropriate initial conditions only a single mode of vibration is excited to lowest order, and some numerical results are given which illustrate the effects of the nonlinearity on these single mode solutions.
    Notes: Sommario Viene considerata una equazione differenziale alle derivate parziali il cui termine lineare dominante implica derivate del terzo ordine del tempo e che contiene un termine non lineare moltiplicato per un parametro di piccola entità. Vengono studiate le soluzioni dell'equazione con le condizioni iniziali e al contorno usando una estensione del metodo asintotico di Krylov-Bogoliubov-Mitropolskii. Le vibrazioni in una sbarra viscoelastica portano ad una equazione del tipo considerato quando la soluzione costitutiva è quella di un normale solido lineare con l'aggiunta di piccole non-linearità di comportamento. Viene studiato nel dettaglio questo particolare problema fisico. Viene mostrato che, con appropriate condizioni iniziali, viene eccitato solo il primo modo di vibrare. Vengono inoltre forniti alcuni risultati numerici che illustrano gli effetti della non linearità per questo particolare modo.

    Notes: Abstract The nonlinear evolution of waves in a low-density plasma in a strong magnetic field is investigated on the basis of the Chew-Goldberger-Low approximation. The nonlinear effects are found to be essentially different for the magneto-acoustic and Alfvén modes. For the magnetic-acoustic mode, waveform distortion occurs at order ε2 (where ɛ is a measure of the linear wave amplitude) and shock formation occurs over a time-scale of order ε−1. For the Alfvén wave, modulation occurs at order ε3 and shock formation over a time-scale of order ε−2. The nature of the waveform distortion is qualitatively different for the two modes.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé On considère une fissure plane du type Griffith en cours de propagation dans un solide infini, homogène, isotrope et élastique, sous l'action des trois modes fondamentaux de sollicitations de ses surfaces. En utilisant une méthode recourant à des couches de dislocations, on a obtenu des solutions de forme fermée décrivant dans le détail, pour le mode II, les composantes des champs de contraintes qui sont associés à ce mode. Des résultats numériques sont communiqués et diverses implications qu'entraînent les conclusions de ce travail sont discutées dans le cas de la propagation fragile ou ductile d'une fissure.
    Abstract: Zusammenfassung In diesem Bericht wird ein sich ausdehnender Riss “Typ Griffith”, der den drei fundamentalen Arten von Oberflächenzugspannung unterliegt in einem unendlichen, homogenen, isotropen, elastischen festen Körper. Man erhält eingehende geschlossene Lösungen für die Art II für die Komponenten des Spannungsfeldes durch den Gebrauch eines Dislokationsschichten Verfahrens und man gibt einige Ergebnisse. Einige Folgen der Ergebnisse für spröde oder zähe Rissausdehnung werden besprochen.
    Notes: Abstract In this paper we consider a moving Griffith-type strip crack subjected to three fundamental modes of surface tractions in an infinite, homogeneous, isotropic, elastic solid. Closed form solutions are obtained in detail for the mode II case for the components of the resulting stress fields using a method of dislocation layers and some numerical results are given. Some implications of the results for brittle and ductile crack growth are discussed.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Das Problem eines homogenen, anisotropen, elastischen Halbraumes, auf dessen Oberfläche sich ein Stempel stetig bewegt, wird betrachtet. Allgemeine Ausdrücke werden für die Spannungskomponenten im Körper für beliebige Anisotropie des Elastizitätsmodultensors abgeleitet. Es wird gezeigt, daß die Normaldruckverteilung unter dem Stempel und die Normalverschiebung der freien Oberfläche außerhalb des Kontaktbereiches von den Elastizitätsmodulkomponenten und der Stempelgeschwindigkeit durch eine einzige Konstante, bezeichnet mit Ω, abhängen. Eine einfache praktische Methode zur Bestimmung von Ω wird angegeben. Die Lösungen werden für den Fall eines orthotropen Materials bestimmt, und die analytischen Ausdrücke für Ω und für die Spannungsverteilung im Körper für diesen Fall angegeben. Numerische Ergebnisse werden graphisch angegeben zur Darstellung der Radialschub-und Tangentialspannungskomponenten in der Nähe der Stempelspitze.
    Notes: Summary The problem is considered of a semi-infinite homogeneous anisotropic elastic solid deformed in plane strain by an indenter moving steadily over its surface. General expressions are derived for the components of stress throughout the medium for arbitrary anisotropy of the elastic modulus tensor. It is shown that the distribution of normal traction under the indenter and the normal displacement of the free surface outside the region of contact depend on the elastic modulus components and the velocity of the indenter through a single constant, denoted by Ω. A simple, practical method of calculating Ω is presented. The solutions are examined in detail for the case of orthotropic materials and analytical expressions are given for Ω and for the complete stress distribution throughout the medium in this case. Representative numerical results are presented graphically to illustrate the angular variations of the scaled radial shear and tangential stress components near the edge of the punch.

    Notes: Summary The differential equationu τ−uux=k(uxx+cuxτ) with initial values on τ=0 is considered. Whenc≠0 this represents a hyperbolic generalization of Burgers' equation. Fork≪1 perturbation solutions are obtained, the outer solution being given completely up to third order, the inner solution (i.e. close to the shock) being given to second. The determination of the unknown functions in the second order inner solution is completed using an integral conservation technique. While the third order inner solution is not explicitly determined, it is shown that matching of the inner and outer solutions at third order is satisfied.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Zwei verschiedene Verallgemeinerungen der Burgers-Gleichung werden für den Fall kleiner multiplikativer Koeffizienten des zweiten Ableitungsterms untersucht. In beiden Fällen bringt die Lösung eine Schockschicht mit sich, wobei angepaßte asymptotische Entwicklungen verwendet werden, um die Lösung außerhalb der Schicht auf die innerhalb der Schicht zu beziehen. Die Berechnungen werden bis zur zweiten Näherung durchgeführt und es werden Ausdrücke für die „Verformung des Schocks zufolge Diffusion” erhalten.
    Notes: Summary Two different generalisations of Burgers' equation are investigated in the case when the coefficient multiplying the second derivative term is small. In both cases the solution involves a shock-layer, and matched asymptotic expansions are used ro relate the solution outside the layer with that inside the layer. The calculations are carried out to the second approximation and expressions are obtained for the “displacement of the shock due to diffusion.”

    Notes: Abstract The effect of a magnetic field on the nonlinear capillary instability of a fluid jet is examined using the method of multiple scales. It is a well-known result that a sufficiently strong magnetic field can, in the limit of zero viscosity and resistivity, completely suppress the linear capillary instability. It turns out that while the nonlinear (modulational) instability cannot be completely suppressed, the presence of a magnetic field does greatly increase the range of stable wave numbers.

Une méthode antérieure due à Bilby, Cottrell et Swinden est étendue aux cas d'un et de deux jeux de plans de glissement a l'extrémité de la félure qui ne sont pas dans le même plan que la félure. Une technique d'approximation fournit la dimension de la zone plastique selon la longueur de la félure, la force appliquée et les angles des plans de glissement. Dans le deuxième cas, une évaluation numérique est nécessaire.
    Abstract: Zusammenfassung Untersucht werden die wesentlichen Merkmale der plastischen Zone am Ende eines Risses in einem, einer Scherungskraft ausgesetzten Stoff. Dies geschieht mittels eines Versetzungsmodells. Es wird eine frühere Methode von Bilby, Cottrell and Swinden(1) verallgemeinert für die Fälle einer and zweier Gleitebenen am Rissende, die nicht mit dem Riss in einer Ebene liegen. Eine Approximations-Technik liefert die Grösse der plastischen Zone ausgedrükt durch Risslänge, angewandte Kraft and Gleitflächenwinkel. Im zweiten Fall ist numerische Behandlung erforderlich.
    Notes: Abstract The characteristics of the plastic enclave at the tip of a crack in a medium subjected to stress are investigated by means of a dislocation model. A model in which dislocations can glide along a plane coplanar with the crack has previously been given by Bilby, Cottrell and Swinden(1), and it is the purpose of this work to extend these authors' results to more general situations. We first of all consider the case of a single slip plane at the crack tip which is inclined to the plane of the crack, and develop an approximation technique for solving the equations of equilibrium of the dislocations. This yields the size of the plastic zone, the density of dislocations and the plastic displacement at the crack tip as explicit functions of the crack-length, applied stress, angle between crack and slip-plane and yield stress and elastic modulus of the medium. These functions become particularly simple for either low or high stresses. A more difficult problem is that in which slip can occur on two different slip-planes at the crack-tip. The same approximation method can be used, but the results are no longer expressible in terms of elementary functions. A computer program has been used to calculate numerical solutions in some cases and in one case to evaluate higher approximations to the solution.
