Notes: Abstract. A total of 517 Vibrio anguillarum strains isolated from discased fish together with 14 V. anguillarum serogroup O2 and V. ordalii type strains were serotyped using the European scrotyping system. Marked species differences were recorded. In isolates from salmonids serovar O1 (70.2%) and O2 (20.2%) were dominantwhilst a minor proportion belonged to other serogroups or were non-typeable. Figures for turbot were similar to those from salmonids. In 32 isolates from sea bass, sea bream and mullet, most strains belonged to serogroup O1. while one was O2a. one O7, and the rest non-typeable In cod serovar O2 was dominant while only a minor proportion belonged to other serogroups or were non-typeable. The ecl isolates belonged equally to serovars O2 and O3. All O2 strain were subtyped with absorbed O2a and O2b antisera. O2a was dominant in all fish species. but in cod. the relative number of O2b isolates was considerably higher than in other fish species. The applicability of the European serotyping system is discussed and compared with other serotyping systems.

Notes: Vaccination of sea-ranched Atlantic salmon was conducted in order to investigate if immuno-prophylactic measures could improve their survival. Fish were either vaccinated by bath or injection. A total of 66 000 fish were reared in fresh water at a hatchery on the island of Bornholm and at the presmolt stage were separated in three groups each comprising of 22 000 fish. One group was vaccinated intraperitoneally with a polyvalent vaccine (containing killed Vibrio anguillarum serotype O1 and O2, Yersinia ruckeri and Aeromonas salmonicida). A second group was bath vaccinated with the corresponding vaccine-components and the third group was used as a non-vaccinated control. One month after vaccination these groups were allocated to three separate net-pens located 500 m from the coastline of the island. After 4 months in the net-pens, 1000 fish from each cage were tagged with Carlin-tags below the dorsal fin. The fish were then released for a migration period in the Baltic Sea. Following a sea period of 40 months (45 months post-vaccination), the recapture rates of the groups were calculated from the returned tags from fishermen. Recapture of the injection vaccinated group was significantly higher (25%) compared with the bath vaccinated fish (14.7%) and the control group (16.8%).

Notes: Abstract. A collection of 130 strains of the bacterial fish pathogen Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida isolated from diseased salmonids in Denmark, Norway, North America and Scotland has been characterized with regard to protein patterns, antibiotic resistance and exoprotease activity. Whole cell and outer membrane protein profiling could distinguish three different profiles in A. salmonicida. Eight outer membrane proteins were demonstrated (49, 40, 38, 37, 33, 31, 30 and 29 kDa). One protein profile was deficient in a 38 kDa outer membrane protein and instead contained an outer membrane protein of 37 kDa which was not detectable among the other protein profiles. Strains with the 37 kDa outer membrane protein showed multiple low-level antibiotic resistance towards cephalothin, penicillin, chloramp-henicol, tetracycline and quinolones. In addition, these strains were exoprotease deficient. Strains with the 37 kDa protein were unable to degrade cattle and trout serum proteins and displayed a delayed degradation of casein. Haemolysis on cattle blood agar plates was similarly delayed. In vivo examination of extracellular products from a normal protein profile strain and one with the 37 kDa outer membrane protein demonstrated major differences in pathological effects in rainbow trout. The strain possessing the 37 kDa outer membrane protein produced almost no pathological effects while the normal protein profile strain produced typical furuncles.

Notes: Summary Two paediatric patients with expanding cysts of the cava Vergae et septi pellucidi are presented. In the first patient, consecutive CT scans showed agrowing cavum thought to be responsible for his dramatic increase in head circumference. In the other patient, the expanding cavum was discovered because a routine skull X-ray after minor head trauma revealed marked impressiones digitatae. Both patients were successfully treated with stereotactically placed internal shunts from the cysts via the lateral ventricle to the subarachnoid space. During this procedure, contrast medium was instilled, and the cysts were visualized on postoperative CT scans. Some dynamic aspects of such expanding cava are discussed.

Notes: Summary A 16-year-old girl with transsphenoidal meningocele and signs of hypothalamic insufficiency is presented. Hormonal disturbances have been reported in only three similar cases in the literature. The radiological criteria for the diagnosis are discussed with emphasis on the differential diagnosis of a persistent craniopharyngeal canal. Based on the present case and studies of the pertinent literature we propose that all patients exhibiting signs of dysraphism of the base of the skull should be thoroughly investigated for hormonal disturbances. Children with cleft palate should be examined for possible concomitant dysraphism of the skull.

Notes: Summary A spinal angioma, diagnosed by gas myelography, is presented. Though situated in the medullary conus, the malformation exclusively drained to the posterior fossa. Associated posterior fossa signs and symptoms, combined with cord findings led to the clinical diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

Notes: Summary The Guillain-Barré syndrome has been studied by lumbar myelography with watersoluble contrast media in seven cases. Abnormalities, which consisted of widening of the nerve roots and obliteration of the root sleeves, were found in three of them. It is possible that myelography accentuated the symptoms in one case while the rest tolerated the examination well.

Notes: Summary Bilateral carotid angiograms of the neck in 100 consecutive adult patients show the bifurcation of the left common carotid artery to be located cranial to the right in 50% of the cases, while the right bifurcation was higher in 22%. The origin of the internal carotid artery was at the dorsal or dorsolateral aspect of the common carotid artery in 82% on the right side and in 94% on the left, while a dorsomedial or medial origin was found in 18% on the right side and in 6% on the left.

Notes: Summary We carried out a study of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteins in 180 patients with sciatica caused by lumbar disc herniation to elucidate further the degree and mechanisms of protein elevations. The 63 controls were patients with tension headache or migraine without aura. The CSF/serum albumin ratios were higher in the patients (mean 8.84, SD 5.16) than in the controls (mean 5.60, SD 2.33). Similar differences were found for the CSF/serum IgG ratios and the CSF-total proteins. The CSF/serum albumin ratios, CSF/serum IgG ratios and the CSF-total protein concentrations were higher in men than in women among the patients. We suggest that the significant difference in ratio parameters between patients and controls indicates a leak of plasma albumin, most likely IgG, into the CSF in patients with sciatica. The leak was more pronounced in men. Also in the control group the CSF/serum albumin and CSF/serum IgG ratios were higher in men.
