    Notes: Effective inventory management is critical to retailing success. Surprisingly, there is little published empirical research examining relationships between retail inventory, sales and customer service. Based on a survey of 101 chain store units, this paper develops and tests a series of hypotheses about retail inventory. Seventy-five percent of the store owners/managers responded to the mail survey. As expected, significant positive relationships were found between inventory, service and sales. Specifically, support was found for the theory that inventory is a function of the square root of sales. Also, greater product variety leads to higher inventory, and service level is an exponential function of inventory. Finally, demand uncertainty was found to have no apparent effect on inventory levels.

    Notes: ISO 9000 and Activity-Based Costing (ABC) are two useful tools for logisticians. Both of these tools can support efforts to improve customer service and/or reduce total costs. Using survey and case study methods, we investigate whether these two techniques are implemented together as complements, are kept separate, or are considered competitors for scarce resources (money, time and talent). The survey revealed that relatively few firms are using both ISO and ABC. Moreover, respondents from firms in which either ISO or ABC were implemented reported higher performance levels than those firms where both were used. Results of the case study suggest that practicing logisticians view ISO 9000 and ABC as separate initiatives. While the quality systems group led the charge to ISO registration, finance and accounting implemented the ABC model. The case firm did little to exploit potentially complementary aspects of the two tools. Indeed, there is evidence that ABC and ISO 9000 actually competed for managerial attention.

However, this literature has yet to develop the demand-stimulating function of inventory. This article introduces the concept of psychic stock, defined as retail display inventory for stimulating demand. Psychic stock is a minimum inventory level, which is modelled by a partitioning of psychic, cycle, and safety stock.

    Notes: Abstract The treatment of incontinence presents many unique issues for biofeedback therapists that are routine for professionals in fields such as nursing or medicine. Although, all professional practice is guided by ethical standards, the unique circumstances encountered during biofeedback treatments for this disorder warrant the development of specific guidelines. This is true whether insertable or surface EMG devices are used. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to propose a set of ethical guidelines for biofeedback therapists. The intended audience includes professionals such as psychologists, clinical psychophysiologists, and other mental health-care providers who use biofeedback techniques. These are not formally endorsed by any professional organizations (e.g., APA, AAPB) at this time. Ethical considerations include proper medical evaluation, informed consent, patient instruction, disrobing, nonerotic physical contact, patient safety, and patient satisfaction.
