Notes: ABSTRACT. We present a mechanical method to horizontally section soft bottom sediment cores to minimize the vertical post-sampling redistribution of motile infaunal macroinvertebrates. A clear acrylic core tube for a standard Kajak-Brinkhurst corer was modified by cutting a series of horizontal slits into the side of the core tube to allow the insertion of sectioning plates for physically sealing each section immediately after core retrieval. The modification is simple, inexpensive and easily adapted to any open barrel gravity corer.

Notes: Abstract Several factors, including body size, age, and temporal and spatial variation, which may influence the amount of cadmium (Cd) in the phantom midge larvae, Chaoborus spp., were examined in eight lakes, four from south-central Ontario (Dorset Region) and four from northwestern Ontario (Experimental Lakes Area). All three species of Chaoborus (C. punctipennis, C. trivittatus, C. flavicans) found in Chub Lake (south-central Ontario), were analyzed seasonally. One species, C. punctipennis, was collected and analyzed from all lakes. Smaller Chaoborus tended to have higher Cd concentrations (μg Cd/g dry weight), and lower Cd burdens (ng Cd/Animal) than larger Chaoborus. The Cd concentrations of Chaoborus in Chub Lake were lowest during the summer, which coincided with the fastest growth of the organisms. The Cd burdens differed between species, which was attributed to differences in their asynchronous life histories. Cadmium burdens and concentrations were significantly lower in the organisms from northwestern Ontario than those from south-central Ontario. Lower atmospheric deposition rates, lower Cd concentrations in the lake water, as well as life history differences, may explain these results.

Notes: Abstract The zinc and lead concentrations were compared in several pairs of sediment cores obtained with a modified K-B corer and by Scuba diver from Coon Lake, Canada. A slow approach to and penetration of the sediments (ca. 0.1 m s-1) was employed for both coring devices. The modified K-B corer gave similar lead and zinc profiles to the diver cores. The divers observed that the K-B corer caused no disturbance of the surface sediment layers as it approached and entered the sediments. These results suggest that the K-B corer is suitable for use in lake studies requiring short, undisturbed cores from fine-grained sediments.

Notes: Abstract An attempt was made to demonstrate the significance of core compression (shortening) by the use of geochemical profiles. In Plastic Lake, Canada, the hypothesis was tested that the measured anthropogenic zinc burdens would differ in the sediments while the measured sediment enrichment factors would be comparable, in shortened and unshortened cores. However, there was no significant difference in either the anthropogenic zinc burdens or the sediment enrichment factors calculated from the shortened and unshortened cores. The fact that the anthropogenic zinc is found, almost exclusively, in the top 10 cm of the sediment in Plastic Lake may explain these results.
