Notes: The influence of the shock wave loading on films of amorphous carbyne was explored. Chemically synthesized films were deposited on copper disks of 1 mm thickness. X-ray and transmission electron microscopy examination of 10 and 150 μm carbyne films recovered after shock loading at pressures of 18, 26, and 36 GPa were carried out. It was detected that 10 μm films partially transformed to carbyne crystals with a size of about 1 μm. Thick films of carbyne transformed to a mixture of an amorphous carbon phase and nanocrystalline cubic diamond. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The interferometer with a submillimeter laser and standard pyroelectric TV camera for visualization of interference fringe pattern is described. Problems typical for the development of such interferometer are solved by choosing of a proper arrangement and a mutual spacing of its elements with respect to laser. The interferograms of a teflon wedge and an arcing plasma are presented as an example.

Notes: Abstract The present paper examines in detail some issues related to the application of submillimeter laser imaging interferometry for measuring electron density radial profiles in small, strongly refracting, plasma objects. Described is an analysis of the optical scheme of an interferometer based on the concepts of geometrical and wave optics. Also given are the results of computerized calculations and optimization of one of the variants of the scheme aimed at obtaining the maximum spatial resolution up to the wavelength under phase distortion of less than 0.1 of the interference order. Besides, the paper discusses the effect of probing radiation deviation at the refractive index gradients of phase-inhomogeneous objects as well as the effect of its possible ellipticity on the interferometric data. The experimental results obtained with various model objects including arcs with low electron density, which burn in conducting flows of combustion products are presented.

Notes: Abstract The near and far field patterns that the EH11 waveguide mode produces upon being launched from the end of an oversized hollow dielectric waveguide have been studied in the submillimeter region for a HCN waveguide laser and waveguide excitated by it. Experimental results agree, in general, with the calculation of Degnan using the Fresnel approximation to scalar diffraction theory.

Notes: Abstract The use of a TV camera with a standard pyroelectric tube for imaging continuous submillimeter (submm) waves is described. The spectral sensitivity of such pyroelectric vidicon has been measured. The results of experiments on diffraction and interference using submm laser radiation are presented. For the first time, submm images of different objects have been obtained with the aid of a pyroelectric vidicon. It has been shown that a pyroelectric TV camera can be effectively employed in various laser studies as well as in submm imagery technique.
