Notes: Summary. For the high-order numerical approximation of hyperbolic systems of conservation laws, we propose to use as a building principle an entropy diminishing criterion instead of the familiar total variation diminishing criterion introduced by Harten for scalar equations. Based on this new criterion, we derive entropy diminishing projections that ensure, both, the second order of accuracy and all of the classical discrete entropy inequalities. The resulting scheme is a nonlinear version of the classical Van Leer's MUSCL scheme. Strong convergence of this second order, entropy satisfying scheme is proved for systems of two equations. Numerical tests demonstrate the interest of our theory.

Notes: Abstract: This paper is concerned with the uniqueness and L 1 continuous dependence of entropy solutions for nonlinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. We study first a class of linear hyperbolic systems with discontinuous coefficients: Each propagating shock wave may be a Lax shock, or a slow or fast undercompressive shock, or else a rarefaction shock. We establish a result of L 1 continuous dependence upon initial data in the case where the system does not contain rarefaction shocks. In the general case our estimate takes into account the total strength of rarefaction shocks. In the proof, a new time-decreasing, weighted L 1 functional is obtained via a step-by-step algorithm. To treat nonlinear systems, we introduce the concept of admissible averaging matrices which are shown to exist for solutions with small amplitude of genuinely nonlinear systems. Interestingly, for many systems of continuum mechanics, they also exist for solutions with arbitrary large amplitude. The key point is that an admissible averaging matrix does not exhibit rarefaction shocks. As a consequence, the L 1 continuous dependence estimate for linear systems can be extended to nonlinear hyperbolic systems using a wave-front tracking technique.

Notes: Abstract: We study the hyperbolic system of Euler equations for an isentropic, compressible fluid governed by a general pressure law. The existence and regularity of the entropy kernel that generates the family of weak entropies is established by solving a new Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation, which is highly singular when the density of the fluid vanishes. New properties of cancellation of singularities in combinations of the entropy kernel and the associated entropy-flux kernel are found. We prove the strong compactness of any sequence that is uniformly bounded in L ∞ and whose corresponding sequence of weak entropy dissipation measures is locally H -1 compact. The existence and large-time behavior of L ∞ entropy solutions of the Cauchy problem are established. This is based on a reduction theorem for Young measures, whose proof is new even for the polytropic perfect gas. The existence result also extends to the p-system of fluid dynamics in Lagrangian coordinates.

Notes: Abstract This paper analyzes the non-classical shock waves which arise as limits of certain diffusive-dispersive approximations to hyperbolic conservation laws. Such shocks occur for non-convex fluxes and connect regions of different convexity. They have negative entropy dissipation for a single convex entropy function, but not all convex entropies, and do not obey the classical Oleinik entropy criterion. We derive necessary conditions for the existence of non-classical shock waves, and construct them as limits of traveling-wave solutions for several diffusive-dispersive approximations. We introduce a “kinetic relation” to act as a selection principle for choosing a unique non-classical solution to the Riemann problem. The convergence to non-classical weak solutions for the Cauchy problem is investigated. Using numerical experiments, we demonstrate that, for the cubic flux-function, the Beam-Warming scheme produces non-classical shocks while no such shocks are observed with the Lax-Wendroff scheme. All of these results depend crucially on the sign of the dispersion coefficient.
