Notes: Laser-induced fluorescence excitation and dispersed fluorescence spectra of the first n–π* transition of jet-cooled 2-methylpyrimidine have been recorded and analyzed. This work extends our earlier study of the spectroscopic and photophysical effects of methyl substitution in 4- and 5-methylpyrimidine. An unusual Fermi resonance involving the 6an0 progression forms the focus of the present study. The 6a10 vibronic transition is observed to be split into a triad of transitions. Dispersed fluorescence spectra are used to identify the dark background state responsible for the Fermi resonance coupling as the 16b1(3a''2) vibration/internal rotation combination level. This level is selectively coupled by symmetry constraints to 6a1(0a1), leaving the 6a1(1e‘) level unperturbed. The positions and intensities of the triad of peaks in the excitation spectrum allow a quantitative determination of the 6a1(0a'1)↔16b1(3a2) coupling matrix element of V=4.1 cm−1. This vibration/internal rotation Fermi resonance is thus typical of the new types of routes to vibrational state mixing which are opened by methyl substitution. Higher members of the 6an0 progression are also involved in Fermi resonance mixing. However, in addition, these levels experience weaker, less state-specific coupling to a bath of same-symmetry states at that energy. The excitation spectrum provides an estimate of the average coupling matrix element of this second tier coupling of ∼1 cm−1.

Notes: Using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition assisted by a nitrogen radical irradiation generated by rf plasma, we have enhanced the quality and the step coverage of titanium nitride barrier metals for the contact holes with a high aspect ratio and a submicron radius. Electrical resistivity measurements show that the film resistivity improves by a factor of five as the proper nitrogen irradiation has been applied. The step coverage in a contact hole with 0.4 μm diam and 3:1 aspect ratio has been improved from 50% to 80% by applying nitrogen plasma, clearly demonstrating the effectiveness of this technique in the conformal deposition of barrier metals for the ultra-large scale integration. The incident nitrogen radical is believed to play several roles, such as the enhancement of surface migration rate of molecules and the reduction of the amount of hydrocarbon incorporating into the film during the deposition. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: I start with two contradictory statements: (1) Jaeger, Aristotle (Eng. trans.), p. 330: ‘Thus all indications point to a late date for the origin of the philosopher's zoological works.’ (2) D'Arcy Thompson, Historia Animalium (Oxford Translation), Prefatory Note: ‘It can be shown that Aristotle's natural history studies were carried on, or mainly carried on, in his middle age, between his two periods of residence at Athens.‘

Notes: The two passages in question are I. the discussion of Justice in Bk. V. chs. I-II, and in particular the definition and subdivisions of Corrective Justice (ch. II 1130b 30–1131a 9); and II. the discussion of the voluntaryand προα⋯ρεσɩς in Bk. III chs. II-II. My object is to show that each is better understood if it is seen in the light of contemporary legal ideas and practice.

Notes: The following remarks on the aviary simile have been prompted by Professor Hackforth's article in C.Q. January 1938, pp. 27 ff., in which he in turn comments on certain points in Professor Cornford's treatment in his Plato's Theory of Knowledge.Commenting on 199c–d C. (137) suggests that P.'s criticism in that passage might be met by the inclusion in the aviary of ‘complex objects such as the “sum of 7 and 5”.... It is this object (sc. the complex object “the sum of 7 and 5”) that I identify with 11 when I make my false judgement.... False judgement can be explained as the wrong putting together of two pieces of knowledge’—i.e. 11 and ‘the sum of 7 and 5’. C. (138) further suggests that P. has overlooked this possibility because he persists in speaking as if we judged not ‘that the sum of 7 and 5 is 11’ but that ‘12 (the number we are seeking) is 11 (the number we lay hold of)’. H. replies that this criticism of C.'s is not valid because P. understands the knowledge of 11 and 12 to include a knowledge of the various sums that make up these numbers. There could, therefore, be no ‘question of “putting together” such a piece of knowledge as 7 + 5 = 12 with a different piece of knowledge, viz. the knowledge of 12. They are not different pieces; they are the same piece.’

Notes: The following brief memoir of Wittgenstein needs a few preliminary words of explanation. Among those who attended his lectures and discussions in the years it covers was D. G. James, who later became Professor of English at Bristol University and then Vice-Chancellor of Southampton University. I met him both in Bristol and Southampton, and on one occasion suggested to him that some of us who had known Wittgenstein, but who had not become professional philosophers, might write down our recollections of him, and that he and I should start. What prompted the suggestion was, I think, the publication of Norman Malcolm's book, and a feeling that the non-professionals might have something to contribute to the assessment of Wittgenstein, particularly as a person. I wrote a preliminary draft and sent it to James; but he never responded, there was much else to do, I let the matter rest, and now James is dead. I wrote in about the year 1960 (my typescript bears no date) on holiday and away from any books of reference and from my own notes of Wittgenstein's lectures and conversations. I have shown the typescript to a few interested people, but because of its preliminary and unfinished nature have not previously thought of publication. It has recently been suggested to me that it might be of more general interest, and I publish it now as it was written, with one or two trifling alterations. I am well aware of its limitations. It was intended to give an impression of Wittgenstein as a person rather than as a philosopher, and the rather miscellaneous collection of remarks in section 3 have that in view rather than any more strictly ‘philosophical’ intention. Others may well question some of the detail and disagree with some of the opinions expressed. And there are some things which I might put rather differently today. But if the memoir has any interest it is best left as it was written.

Notes: Abstract Hamartoma of the breast is a relatively rare, well-circumscribed benign breast tumour that lacks a true capsule, and is composed primarily of dense, fibrous tissue with associated ducts and a variable amount of fat. A typical mammographic finding is a well-delineated, non-homogeneous mass containing mottled densities corresponding to fat, epithelium and connective tissue. Ultrasonographically, hamartoma has a well-circumscribed heterogeneous internal echo pattern corresponding to areas of fat and soft tissue components. This is the first original paper to describe the MRI findings of hamartomas. Mammography and ultrasonography usually enable a diagnosis of hamartoma; however, gadolinium-DTPA enhanced dynamic MRI is the only method in the preoperative management of atypical hamartomas that allows the exclusion of malignancy elsewhere in the breast and hamartoma.
