    Notes: Introduction: Action potential duration restitution (APDR) plays a role in initiation and maintenance of ventricular tachycardia (VT)/ventricular fibrillation (VF). We hypothesized that the steeply sloped APDR and its spatial heterogeneity contribute to VT/VF inducibility in patients with ventricular arrhythmia. Method and Results: After programmed ventricular stimulation (PVS) for evaluation of clinically documented VT, patients (n = 20, 15 male, age 52.5 ± 9.5 years) were divided into two groups: inducible sustained VT/VF (IVT, n = 10) and noninducible VT/VF (NVT, n = 10). Data were compared with the corresponding results obtained from normal controls (C, n = 10). Right ventricular (RV) monophasic action potential duration at 90% repolarization (APD90) and ventricular effective refractory period (VERP) in the right ventricular apex (RVA) and right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) were determined. APDR was acquired by scanning diastole with premature ventricular beats during a pacing cycle length of 600 msec (S1-S2) in all patients and by rapid pacing at the cycle lengths that induced APD alternans in three patients. Maximal slopes (Smax) of the APDR curves and ΔAPD90 (APD90 at S2 400 ms – APD90 at the shortest S2) were measured. VERP and APD90 at each RV site did not differ among the three groups. Smax obtained by S1-S2 (1.6 ± 0.6) did not differ from Smax obtained by rapid pacing (1.2 ± 0.7), with a significant correlation noted between these values (r = 0.92, P 〈 0.01). The IVT group had a higher spatial dispersion of Smax (Smax at RVOT – Smax at RVA) compared to the C group (P 〈 0.05), with no difference between the NVT group and the IVT or C groups. The IVT group had a higher spatial dispersion of ΔAPD90 compared to the NVT and C groups (P 〈 0.01, respectively). Smax at the RVOT (2.7 ± 1.9) was steeper than that at the RVA (1.9 ± 1.2, P 〈 0.05). Inducibility of sustained VT/VF was greater at the RVOT (83.3%) than at the RVA (50.0%, P 〈 0.05). Conclusion: In patients with ventricular arrhythmia, VT/VF is highly inducible under conditions of greater spatial dispersion of ventricular refractoriness and APDR.

It also aims to come up with plans to efficiently introduce external knowledge by applying information technology.This research was conducted focusing on the cases of enterprises that are carrying out knowledge management by applying information technology and the result shows that Korean enterprises place high value on the application of information technology in introducing knowledge management. However, the use of information technology is not common to all enterprises in four kinds of knowledge conversion. For an organization to efficiently acquire and apply valuable knowledge, the boundary of an enterprise should be extended, and for this, the enterprise should be changed into an extended knowledge enterprise, which is founded on the trust and compensation of all the interested parties. In an extended knowledge enterprise, its first consideration is to acquire knowledge that can efficiently manage and control the interests of customers, suppliers, public institutions, and competitors that exist in the surroundings and to acquire the core knowledge that can make those people and institutions participate. In addition, the organization should possess knowledge base and information communication technology that can smoothly convert data and information into knowledge, by efficiently connecting them.

    Notes: Abstract Fractional precipitation is a simple and efficient procedure for pre-purification of paclitaxel. The optimal methanol composition in water, paclitaxel content in crude extract, storage temperature, and time were 61.5% (v/v), 0.5% (w/v), 0 °C, and 3 days, respectively. As purity of the paclitaxel in the crude extract increases, the purity and yield of paclitaxel from fractional precipitation increases. This pre-purification process serves to minimize the solvent usage, size and complexity of the HPLC operations for paclitaxel purification. This process is readily scalable to a pilot plant and eventually to a production environment where multikilogram quantities of material are expected to be produced.

    Notes: Abstract Two novel antimicrobial peptides were isolated and characterized from the roots of shepherd's purse, Capsella bursa-pastoris. These antimicrobial peptides, named shepherin I and shepherin II, consist of 28 and 38 amino acids, respectively, and are glycine- and histidine-rich peptides. Shepherin I and shepherin II have 67.9% and 65.8% (mol/mol) glycine, respectively, and 28.6% and 21.1% (mol/mol) histidine, respectively. Both shepherins have a Gly-Gly-His motif. These antimicrobial peptides exhibit antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacteria and fungi. Circular dichroism spectra of shepherin I and shepherin II showed that shepherin I and shepherin II in 50% trifluoroethanol have 66.7% and 75% random coils, respectively, without any α-helices. cDNA sequence analysis revealed that shepherin I and shepherin II are produced from a single polypeptide, designated shep-GRP, consisting of 120 amino acids; shep-GRP has five distinct domains, an amino-terminal putative signal peptide, a shepherin I, a linker dipeptide, a shepherin II and a carboxy-terminal peptide. Southern blot analysis indicates that the gene encoding shepherins belongs to a low-complexity gene family. Northern blot analysis revealed that transcripts of shep-GRP are present in roots but not in leaves and stems.
