Notes: Various different combinations of histochemical stains at differing pH levels on single sections of bovine skeletal muscle were evaluated. The staining sequence that was the most consistent and reliable of those studied included an initial NADH-TR (reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotidetetrazolium reductase) followed by an acid ATPase stain at pH 4.15. This staining combination resulted in easily discernable type I, II A, and II myofibers. Thus, a marked saving of expended time, labor and materials was realized.

Notes: A Light, scanning and transmission electron microscopic study of the coyote respiratory system was carried out, utilizing ten coyotes of both sexes. The animals ranges in age from 8 to 24 months and were in good health. Comparison of the respiratory tissues of the coyote with other Canid species are made.

Notes: Summary Neuronal ceroidosis was observed in an 18-month-old male Blue Heeler dog which was euthanized after showing a progressive gait and behavior abnormality, depression, paresthesia, and vision deterioration. The brain was slightly atrophic. Histopathology revealed autofluorescent, periodic acid-Schiff, luxol fast blue, and oil red O-positive intracytoplasmic granules in the neurons of the brain and spinal cord. There was a moderate diffuse reduction in the number of cerebellar and cerebrocortical neurons. Ultrastructurally, these neuronal cytosomes were diverse with preponderance of membranous profiles and granular matrix.

Notes: Summary Experimental reproduction and ultrastructural findings of spongy degeneration of the central nervous system of hyperammonemic calves are described. Hyperammonemia was produced by intravenous infusion of ammonium acetate. Histologic findings were stereotyped in all calves and characterized by widespread vacuolation of white and grey matter of the brain and spinal cord. Electron microscopy revealed widespread intramyelinic vacuoles, some expansion of extracellular spaces and swollen mitochondria. There were minimal changes in neurons, axons and glia, and little evidence of myelin breakdown. Hyperammonemia may be one of the pathogeneses involved in the CNS spongy degeneration in man and domestic animals affected with hepatocerebral diseases and some hereditary disorders.

Notes: Summary The Arnold-Chiari malformation is described in 10 calves. Eight of them had internal hydrocephalus and/or spina bifida and two occurred as a single isolated defect without associated anomaly. Malformation of the base of the skull and large foramen magnum appeared to indicate that the abnormal embryonic development of the neural tissue and basal bone may contribute to the development of the Arnold-Chiari malformation in cattle.

Notes: Abstract A simple method for improving the nutritive quality of canola and high glucosinolate rapeseed meals for monogastric animals (chicks) was developed; the meals were mixed with NaHCO3 and NH4HCO3, then heated in a conventional oven. Chicks fed untreated canola or rapeseed meals gained less weight than those fed a soybean meal diet, whereas chicks fed the alkaline-heated meals had weight gains not significantly different than those fed the soybean diet. The antithyroid effect of the untreated rapeseed meal was reduced by alkaline treatment of the meals, as shown by improved T4 and free T4 levels in chicks fed the processed products. In chicks fed untreated or alkaline-treated canola or alkaline heated rapeseed meal, all thyroid hormone levels were similar to those of birds fed the soybean meal diet. However, heart tissue of chicks fed diets containing rapeseed or canola meals showed muscle fiber degeneration, although relative heart weights were the same in all groups. Liver tissue from most of the chicks in all dietary groups appeared normal or only slightly abnormal. The nutritive value of both rapeseed and canola meals was improved by this simple processing technique.
