    Description / Table of Contents: Eine Anzahl von Harzen wurde durch gemeinsame Kondensation von p-Aminoacetophenon (p-AAph), substituierten Benzoesäuren wie m-Tolylsäure (m-TA), o-Tolylsäure (o-TA), Phthalsäure (PhA), p-Nitrobenzoesäure (p-NBA), p-Chlorbenzoesäure (p-CIBA) und Formaldehyd (F) in Gegenwart von verschiedenen Säuren und Basen als Katalysatoren hergestellt. Die Harze wurden IR-spektroskopisch charakterisiert. Die Löslichkeitsparameter wurden gemäß Small's Gruppenbeteiligung berechnet; sie stimmen gut mit den experimentellen Werten überein. Das thermische Verhalten und die bakteriologischen Eigenschaften der Harze wurden auch untersucht.
    Notes: A number of resins has been prepared by condensing p-amino-acetophenone (p-AAph) with substituted benzoic acid such as m-toluic acid (m-TA), o-toluic acid (o-TA), phthalic acid (PhA), p-nitrobenzoic acid (p-NBA), p-chlorobenzoic acid (p-CIBA) and formaldehyde (F) in presence of some acids and bases as catalysts. The resins were characterized by infrared spectra of the characteristic groups. The solubility parameters were calculated from Small's group contribution which agreed well with the experimental values. The thermal behaviour and the bacteriological properties of the resins have also been investigated.

    Notes: 13C NMR was extensively used to determine the tacticity of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA), and poly(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) grafted onto silk fibers using radiation-induced graft copolymerization. All polymers are predominantly syndiotactic and the tacticity is virtually independent of the degree of grafting. The value of PΣ (= Pm/r + Pr/m) was calculated from the triad distribution and was found to be approximately one. This indicates that all the above polymer chains grafted onto silk fibers are syndiotactic and obey Bernoullian statistics. The number-average sequence length of either meso or racemic additions was determined using the triad distribution. The 13C NMR relaxation parameters, spin-lattice relaxation time, T1, and nuclear Overhauser effect, NOE, were observed and then the value of the correlation time for average segmental motion, τc, and the width parameter, p, were determined by assuming a log χ2 distribution for the correlation time. A relatively small value of p was obtained, indicating that the distribution of the correlation time is large. Taking into account the τc values of different poly(alkyl methacrylate) chains grafted onto silk fibers, the following order of segmental motion was furnished: PMMA 〉 PEMA 〉 PBMA.

    Notes: The graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate in wool fibers was investigated in aqueous solution using V5+ - thiourea redox system. The rate of grafting was determined by varying monomer, thiourea, acidity of the medium, temperature, nature of wool, different acrylic monomers, and reaction medium. The graft yield increases significantly by increasing reaction time in the initial stages of the reaction but it does slow down on prolonging the duration of grafting. The effect of increasing monomer concentration brings about a significant enhancement in the graft yield. The graft yield increases with increasing thiourea concentration, but beyond 0.0075M, the percentage graft yield decreases. The graft yields are considerably influenced by chemical modification prior to grafting. Wool reduced with thioglycolic acid is more susceptible to grafting than untreated wool; the opposite effect is noted in the case of trinitrophenylated and esterified wools. A suitable kinetic scheme has been proposed and the rate equation has been evaluated.

The rate of grafting was determined by varying monomer, peroxydiphosphate ion, temperature, solvent, and nature of wool. The graft yield increases with increase in monomer concentration. The graft yield increases significantly by increasing peroxydiphosphate ion up to 80 × 10-4mole/l.; with further increase of peroxydiphosphate ion the graft yield decreases. The rate of grafting increases with increase in temperature. The effect of acid-and water-soluble solvents on the rate of grafting was investigated and a suitable rate expression has been derived.

    Notes: The reactivity ratios, thermal behavior, and the bacteriocidal properties of the resins prepared from substituted acetophenones, i.e., m-aminoacetophenone, o-hydroxyacetophenone, and m-hydroxyacetophenone, have been investigated. The results obtained from the bacteriocidal studies are found to be quite interesting. Some of the resins synthesized are potent bacteriocides. The simple Kelen - Tüdös linear graphical method was used to determine the order of reactivity of substituted acetophenones when they are copolymerized with halogen-substituted anilines, i.e., o-chloroaniline, m-chloroaniline, and p-chloroaniline. The resins are found to be thermally stable and the energy of activation have been evaluated from TG curve by applying the Freeman - Anderson and Broido methods.

    Notes: The kinetics of polymerization of acrylic acid initiated by Cr6+-thiourea, Cr6+-thioacetamide, Cr6+-2-aminoethane thiol, Cr6+-cysteine, and Cr6+-thioglycollic acid have been studied at 30, 35, and 40°C in nitrogen. The rates of polymerization were measured. Chromic acid alone did not initiate the polymerization under deaerated and un-deaerated conditions. On the basis of the experimental observation of the dependence of the rate of polymerization Rp on various variables, a suitable kinetic scheme is proposed.

    Notes: Aqueous polymerization of methyl methacrylate in visible light was studied using isoquinoline-sulphur dioxide (IQ-SO2) charge-transfer complex as the photoinitiator. Analysis of kinetic and other data indicate that the polymerization proceed via a radical mechanism and the termination is dependent on the initiator concentration. Chain-termination via degradative chain (initiator) transfer appears to be predominant here.
