The isotopic exchange technique is applied to determine the exchangeability of Na, Cs, Tl, Sr, and Ba ions in clays - particularly in bentonite and vermiculite - after heat treatment. Two groups of ions can be distinguished. Small ions are more and more fixed above 100°C with increasing treatment temperature. Larger ions are not fixed below 500-700°C but show strongly increasing fixation at higher temperatures. In bentonite Sr2+ still belongs to the small-ion group, in vermiculite it already behaves like a large ion. The results are discussed with regard to the fixation mechanism as well as to the applicability of isotopic exchange technique.

Die Isotopenaustauschmethode wird angewandt, um das Austauschvermögen von Na-, Cs-, Tl-, Sr- und Ba-Ionen in Tonmineralien, vor allem Bentonit und Vermiculit, nach dem Erhitzen auf verschiedene Temperaturen zu messen. Man kann auf Grund ihres Verhaltens zwei Gruppen von Ionen unterscheiden. Kleine Ionen werden ab etwa 100° mit steigender Temperatur gleichmäßig zunehmend fixiert. Große Ionen zeigen bis 500° bzw. 700° gar keine und erst danach schnell zunehmend Fixierung. Sr2+ gehört im Bentonit noch zur Gruppe der kleinen Ionen, im Vermiculit dagegen verhält es sich schon wie ein großes Ion. Die Ergebnisse werden sowohl im Hinblick auf den Fixierungsmechanismus als auch im Hinblick auf die Anwendung der Isotopenaustauschmethode diskutiert.
