    Notes: TiN films have been synthesized by dual ion beam sputtering (DIBS) deposition at the temperature below 100 °C. Ion bombardment influenced the metallographic morphology and crystalline orientation of TiN films. TiN film formed under N+ bombardment at low energy (〈1 keV) consisted of fine crystal particles without texture. The film bombarded at 300 eV exhibited a hardness of 2750 kgf/mm2, which was an extremely high value for TiN films currently obtained by ion beam assisted deposition. The tribological tests demonstrated that TiN film synthesized by DIBS possessed good wear resistance.

    Notes: Raman characterization of aligned carbon nanotubes of average diameter 10–15 nm, produced by chemical vapor deposition on a mesoporous substrate, has been carried out. The resonance behavior and higher-order Raman bands up to fourth order have been observed and compared with those of carbon nanotubes produced by arc discharge and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite, as well as pyrolytic graphite. The phonon properties have been analyzed with the help of high-resolution transmission electron microscope studies. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The growth of carbon nanotubes from catalytic thermal decomposition of acetylene on fine iron particles has been studied. Electron microscopic images of the carbon nanotubes “as formed” and after annealing treatment are presented. Besides the ordinary carbon nanotubes which have been reported (S. Iijima, Nature, 354 (1991) 56), we have found, at first time, two other new kinds of carbon nanotubes: one is straight or curved nanotube with many irregular multi-layered diaphragms in the hollow core, in particular, the fringes of the wall of the tubes are not parallel to the axis of the tube; another one has many regular diaphragms (bamboo-like) which keep almost constant distance with each other. A model that postulates two steps growth of nanotubes from catalyst particles is proposed to explain the microstructure of the novel carbon nanotubes.
