Description / Table of Contents:
The catalytic activity of the metals on the decomposition of hydrazine increases in the 1st and 3rd transition period in the sequence Cr 〈 Mn 〈 Fe and W 〈 Re 〈 Os, respectively. This is explained by the stability of the corresponding metal nitrides, decreasing in the same sequence. The decomposition of N2H4 to NH3, N2 and H2 is accompanied by an autocatalytic effect of H2. A new reaction mechanism is proposed, whereupon a part of the hydrazine is directly hydrogenated to NH3 by evolving H2.
Notes:
W 〈 Re 〈 Os.
