Notizen: Abstract The kappa opioid, U50,488, was examined alone and in combination with the 5HT2 antagonists, ketanserin, pirenperone and LY 53857. Squirrel monkeys responded under a shock titration procedure in which shock intensity increased every 15 s from 0.01 to 2.0 mA in 30 steps. Five responses terminated the shock for 15 s, after which the shock resumed at the next lower intensity. The level at which the monkeys kept the shock 50% of the time (median shock level/MSL) was determined. U50,488 alone produced dose-dependent increases in median shock level whereas none of the 5-HT2 antagonists altered responding under this procedure. When ketanserin (0.032–5.6 mg/kg) was administered in combination with U50,488, very high doses of ketanserin (3.2–5.6 mg/kg) shifted the U50,488 dose-effect curve to the left. Neither pirenperone (0.032–10.0 µg/kg) nor LY53857 (0.01–0.32 mg/kg) altered the U50,488 dose-effect curve in any monkey. Taken together, these data do not support a role for the 5-HT2 system in kappa-induced antinociception in the primate.

Notizen: Abstract The human influenza pandemics of 1957 and 1968 were caused by reassortant viruses that possessed internal gene segments from avian and human strains. Whether genetic reassortment of human and avian influenza viruses occurs during interpandemic periods and how often humans are infected with such reassortants is not known. To provide this information, we used dot-blot hybridization, partial nucleotide sequencing and subsequent phylogenetic analysis to examine the 6 internal genes of 122 viruses isolated in humans between 1933 and 1992 primarily from Asia, Europe, and the Americas. The internal genes of A/New Jersey/11/76 isolated from a human fatality at Fort Dix, New Jersey in 1976 were found to be of porcine origin. Although none of the geographically and temporally diverse collection of 122 viruses was an avian-human or other reassortant, cognizance was made of the fact that there were two isolates from children from amongst 546 influenza A isolates obtained from The Netherlands from 1989–1994 which were influenza reassortants containing genes of avian origin, viruses which have infected European pigs since 1983–1985. Thus, genetic reassortment between avian and human influenza strains does occur in the emergence of pandemic and interpandemic influenza A viruses. However, in the interpandemic periods the reassortants have no survival advantage, and the circulating interpandemic influenza viruses in humans do not appear to accumulate avian influenza virus genes.

Notizen: Abstract The influence of grain-boundary hydride (MgH2) precipitation on the mechanical properties of Magnox AL80 has been investigated by carrying out slow tensile and fatigue tests. The presence of hydride precipitates at some grain boundaries was found to have a detrimental effect on the slow tensile ductilities at the lower end (20 to 40% h−1) of the range of strain rates used (20 to 2000% h−1) at 250° C and at 20% h−1 at 300° C. Grain-boundary cavities caused by the dissociation of the hydride precipitates were introduced either byin situ thermal treatment prior to testing at 250° C or by testing at higher temperatures and also resulted in lower tensile ductilities at slow strain rates. The fatigue lives of Magnox AL80 were not significantly influenced by the presence of grain-boundary hydride precipitates or cavities due to the dissociation of the precipitates. This is due to the majority of the boundaries being unsuitably oriented to experience high shear stresses. Long-term ageing at 450° C was found to reduce the subsequent fatigue strength at that temperature and this effect is associated with the boundaries becoming more prone to migration during fatigue cycling.

Notizen: Abstract Grain boundary precipitates in Magnox ALSO (Mg-0.8% Al) formed after certain heat treatments have been identified as magnesium hydride, MgH2. The solvus temperature for the precipitates was found to be in the range of 300 to 350° C. Ageing at 250° C resulted in overall precipitate growth accompanied by the formation of some grain boundary cavities. Cavities were also formed when hydride precipitates were reheated to higher temperatures. The solvus temperature and the behaviour of the precipitates during ageing at 250° C and subsequent heating to higher temperatures are discussed in terms of the magnesium-hydrogen system.
