Summary 153 consecutively finished orthodontic cases were evaluated with regard to apical root resorptions of upper front teeth. The orthodontic treatment was carried out by the means of .018″ edgewise, extraoral anchorage, functional jaw orthopedic appliances and removable retainers. Standardized intraoral radiographs before and after treatment were used to measure root lengths to the nearest 1/10 mm, using the presumably stable crown lengths to correct for enlargement differences. The findings indicate that apical root resorptions are common phenomena in various kinds of orthodontic treatment. Mean values for the upper incisors (2,1±1,2) were respectively 0,84 (±1,01) mm, 0,82 (±0,78) mm, 0,96 (±0,93) mm and 0,98 (±1,02) mm. A tendency of increased root resorption was observed in patients treated with intermaxillary elastics, rectangular archwires (.016″×.022″) and after active extrusion of impacted canine teeth. Teeth with incomplete root formation at the initiation of treatment appeared to be less prone to apical root resorption than teeth with fully developed roots.
