    Notizen: Abstract  Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus principally infects neuron systems of animals and causes severe encephalitis. The mechanism by which the virus enters the central nervous system (CNS) from the circulatory system remains elusive. In this study, electron-microscopic techniques have been used to determine these sequential events in the suckling mouse brain. The results indicate that (1) endocytosis is employed when JE virus is transported across the cerebral blood vessels (CBV) and breaches the blood-brain barrier (BBB). (2) Uncoated vesicles, which may be caveolae, and coated vesicles are involved in the endocytic and transcytotic vesicles of capillary endothelium and pericytes. (3) The JE virus is transported in endocytic vesicles across the endothelial cells and pericytes. (4) Endocytosis and transportation of JE virus in pericytes seems to be the same as that in endothelial cells. (5) The interaction of the viral envelope and cell membrane of endothelial cells and pericytes plays an important role in the endocytosis. This study elucidates the infectious processes of JE virus entering the CNS from the circulatory system in the mouse brain.

    Notizen: Abstract In this paper, we present efficient VLSI architectures for full-search block-matching motion estimation (BMME) algorithm. Given a search range, we partition it into sub-search arrays called tiles. By fully exploiting data dependency within a tile, efficient VLSI architectures can be obtained. Using the proposed VLSI architectures, all the block-matchings in a tile can be processed in parallel. All the tiles within a search range can be processed serially or concurrently depending on various requirements. With the consideration of processing speed, hardware cost, and I/O bandwidth, the optimal tile size for a specific video application is analyzed. By partitioning a search range into tiles with appropriate size, flexible VLSI designs with different throughput can be obtained. In this way, cost effective VLSI designs for a wide range of video applications, from H.261 to HDTV, can be achieved.

    Notizen: Means of reducing the flow-induced residual stresses in injection molded parts through optimization of the thermal history of the process are presented. An approach through the use of a passive insulation layer with low thermal inertia on the cavity surface was investigated. The passive insulation layer prevents the polymer melt from freezing during mold filling and allows the flow-induced stresses to relax after the filling. The criteria for the optimal thermal properties and the required thickness of the layer are presented. A numerical simulation model of non-isothermal filling and cooling of viscoelastic materials was also used to understand the molding process and to evaluate this approach. This model predicts the stress development and relaxation in the molding cycle. Both simulation and experimental results show that the final stresses in the molded parts can be reduced significantly with the use of an insulation layer. This technique can also be applied to other molding or forming processes in order to decouple the material flow and cooling process for minimum residual stresses in the molded parts.

    Notizen: Non-isothermal mold filing and curing experiments of liquid composite molding were carried out in this work. To compare the experimental results with a previously developed numerical simulation model, measurements of volumetric heat transfer coefficient between the resin and the fiber, and characterization of resin kinetics and rheological changes were also conducted. Combined with the previously measured fiber perform permeability, the numerical model provided a good prediction of temperature profiles during molding for a polyurethane/glass fiber composite.

    Notizen: Mathematical models are proposed to simulate the flow induced fiber mat deformation during liquid composite molding. The fiber bed is treated as an elastic beam and the load acting on the bed causes its deformation. The lubrication approximation is used to simplify the resin flow equation in the fiber free region, while Darcy's law is used to calculate the pressure and velocity fields in the deformed fiber bed. The governing equations are solved using the control volume/finite element method. The numerical results show reasonable agreement with the experimental results from Part I.

    Notizen: When a resin in injected into the mold in liquid composite molding, the preplaced fiber mat may deform near the inlet gate because of the high momentum carried by the injected fluid. A fiber free region near the gate followed by the fiber mat deformation may emerge. This phenomenon is most likely to occur when the stacked fiber mats have low permeability and the resin has high viscosity. A set of mold filling experiments were carried out using an instrumented metal mold and a small transparent mold to investigate the fiber mat deformation during mold filling. Experimental results showed that the fiber mat deformation was limited to a small region near the gate and that deformation greatly reduced the molding pressure. A forced fiber mat deformation employing a modified gate design was proposed to facilitate mold filling in liquid composite molding.

The mold filling experiments were conducted with various mat stacks consisting of continuous random glass fiber mats and bidirectional stitched glass fiber mats. The use of two different mat types in the mat stack created porosity and permeability variations. The effect of these permeability variations was studied by taking flow pressure measurements and observing the progress of the flow front of a non-reactive fluid filling a clear acrylic mold that contained the reinforcement mat stack. Numerical simulation corresponding to each experiment was also carried out. The numerical results were compared to the experimental measurements.
