Notes: [Auszug] Mating in flowering plants normally relies on animals, wind, gravity or secretion to convey pollen grains from the male (anther) to the female (stigma) organ. Here we describe a new type of self-pollination mechanism in the tree-living orchid Holcoglossum amesianum, in which the bisexual flower ...

Notes: Abstract An automatic understanding system MAD-READER based on the techniques of image processing, pattern recognition, and artificial intelligence has been developed for mechanical engineering drawings. The principles of the system are presented, which include the methods and techniques of recognition and understanding for topological assembly drawings (TAD). A rule-based generator GEN-PLAN is devised to generate directly assembly plans from TAD assembly drawings. A variety of TAD assembly drawings has been used for testing the generator. So far, GEN-PLAN has been used to recognize TAD assembly drawings which consist of 31 part symbols, and generate their assembly plans. The present generator has shown favorable results.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the infinite horizon Markovian decision programming with recursive reward functions is discussed. We show that Bellman's optimal principle is applicable for our model. Then, a sufficient and necessary condition for a policy to be optimal is given. For the stationary case, an iteration algorithm for finding a stationary optimal policy is designed. The algorithm is a generalization of Howard's [7] and Iwamoto's [3] algorithms.

Notes: Dispersants are selected and optimized by determining the height of emulsion in thecolorimetric cylinder after standing in order to ensure the homogeneity of the powder and the stabilityof electroless plating solution. Experimental results show that non-ionic surfactants such asPEG6000,PEG10000,OP-10 have stronger emulsifying ability to α-Al2O3 powder in ordinarycondition and IW has more stability at 80~90°C. The optimum conditions are suggested as PEG60008g, IW 0.95g and ethanol 3mL per 50mL solution. Moreover, this composite electrolessplatingsolution is stable for seven days under 90°C. Therefore it has more dispersing ability. The SEMimages show that the powder in the coating is homogeneous. The electroless plating coating consistsof α-Al2O3 and amorphous Ni-P that will change into crystal Ni3P and Ni-base solid solution afterheat treatment at 400°C for one hour, the α-Al2O3 powders are dispersed evenly in the nickel matrix

Notes: Abstract. This paper presents a technique for extracting the user-entered information from bankcheck images based on a layout-driven item extraction method. The baselines of checks are detected and eliminated by using gray-level mathematical morphology. A priori information about the positions of data is integrated into a combination of top-down and bottom-up analyses of check images. The handwritten information is extracted by a local thresholding technique and the information lost during baseline elimination is restored by mathematical morphology with dynamic kernels. A goal-directed evaluation of the extraction approaches is proposed, and both qualitative and quantitative analyses show noticeable advantages of the proposed approach over the existing approaches.

Notes: Abstract Leaf explants of 24 cultivars and 2 F1 hybrids of the common tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) and ofL. pimpinellifolium Brezh. were cultured on Murashige-Skoog medium containing different concentrations of NaCl. The cultures of 11 genotypes formed flower buds when cultured on medium containing 0.5% NaCl. Flower formation occurred either by direct differentiation from the leaf cultures or by transition of the apices of regenerated shoots from the vegetative state to floral buds. No flower formation occurred on medium without NaCl or media with 1.0% NaCl or more. There existed great differences in the capacity of in-vitro flower formation in the tomato leaf explants among the genotypes tested. The genotypes whose explants did form flowers were all of determinate growth habit.

Notes: Abstract The development of oxygen-sensitive paramagnetic materials is being actively pursued because of their potential applications forin vivo electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) oximetry. Among these materials, fusinite is of particular interest because of the high sensitivity of the EPR linewidth to the partial pressure pO2. Although this material has led to a number of very useful results in experimental systems, its potential use in humans is limited by the need to prove that it will not cause deleterious effects. The strategy used in this study to optimize the biocompatibility of the oxygen-sensitive materials was to prepare small silicon implants containing the fusinite. The use of silicon permits the diffusion of oxygen inside the implant while the material does not have contact with the biological environment. Radiosterilization did not affect the pO2 sensitivity of the material. The feasibility of performing pO2 measurement was verifiedin vivo by perodically inducing ischemia in the gastrocnemius muscle of mice over a period of 6 weeks.
