Notes: Electric-field-induced phase transitions and piezoelectric properties of 〈001〉-oriented Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3–xPbTiO3 single crystals for x=4.5% and 8% (PZN–4.5%PT and PZN–8%PT) have been investigated as a function of temperature. It was found that the piezoelectric properties and phase transitions for both crystals are strongly dependent on temperature. The measurements of polarization and strain as a function of unipolar electric field show that the field for the rhombohedral–tetragonal phase transition decreases linearly with temperature in the range between 25 and 105 °C. Thus, raising the temperature can stabilize the tetragonal phase in 〈001〉-oriented PZN–PT crystals. Longitudinal piezoelectric constant d33 in the rhombohedral phase increases with temperature for both crystals; in PZN–4.5%PT the slope itself increases significantly at temperatures over 60 °C. In the field-induced tetragonal phase, there is little change in d33 for PZN–8%PT within the temperature range investigated, while in PZN–4.5%PT a slight increase of d33 with temperature was observed at temperatures above 80 °C. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Adsorption and flocculation properties have been investigated for a well-characterized aqueous system of precipitated nanometric silicabeads in the presence of a high molecular-weight poly(ethylene oxide). Particular attention was given to the evolution of these properties with increasing concentration. In addition, the corresponding consequences on the rheological behavior in the homogeneous domains of the phase diagram of the systems were studied. Important rheological effects can actually be obtained with such systems, even at moderate values of the volume fraction of the dispersed phase (5·10−3≦Φ≦5·10−2). According to the adsorption level, the number of particles per macromolecular chain, and the free polymer equilibrium concentration, quite different phenomena were observed such as rheopectic shear-induced gelation, Newtonian flow or thixotropic shear-thinning.

Notes: The relatively labile nitrone, α-methyl-(N-methylene)benzeneethanamine N-oxide was isolated from incubates of (±)-N-methylamphetamine with fortified liver homogenates from rats and rabbit. Identification of the nitrone was confirmed directly by gas chromatography and gas chromatography mass spectrometry and, after its conversion to isoxazolidine adducts by the action of methyl and ethyl acrylate. An authentic sample of the nitrone was synthesized unequivocally from N-hydroxyamphetamine and formaldehyde. The isomeric nitrone, N-(α-methylbenzeneethylidene)methylamine N-oxide, was also synthesized and its gas chromatographic and gas chromatographic mass spectrometric characteristics determined to confirm that the metabolically formed nitrone was not N-(α-methylbenzeneethylidene)methylamine N-oxide. Two previously unreported metabolites of (±)-N-methylamphetamine, N-hydroxyamphetamine and 1-hydroxy-1-phenyl-2-propanone, were isolated from rat in vitro experiments; the latter metabolite was not produced in vitro by rabbit liver homogenates.
