Notes: Abstract MtDNA analyses were employed to examine the species identification of three preserved museum sturgeon specimens from the River Guadalquivir, two of which were originally described as Acipenser sturio L., 1758 by Hernando (1975; Doñana, Acta Vertd 2: 263–264). Later the same two specimens were identified as A. naccarii Bonaparte, 1836 by Garrido-Ramos et al. (1997; Mar Biol 129: 33–39) on the basis of morphometric and nuclear DNA analyses. Three different laboratories using independent techniques were unsuccessful in extracting authentic DNA from tissue samples from the three specimens and in obtaining any verifiable PCR product. We cannot confirm the previous molecular identification of two of these specimens by Garrido-Ramos et al. as A. naccarii. We suggest that these specimens are indeed A. sturio.

Notes: Thin film magnetostrictive materials can be extremely useful as the active material in microactuators. In this article, some results on a novel type of multilayer structure which combines exchange coupled giant magnetostrictive materials and materials with large magnetic polarizations are presented for the first time. Giant magnetostrictions are achieved at low fields, due to the polarization enhancement in such multilayers. Therefore such composite materials should be much more appropriate for applications than the simple homogeneous alloy films studied up to now. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We develop a statistical model for the calculation of the spectral performance of two-dimensional (2D) array of gamma-ray spectrometers. We consider a nonuniform field in the device, determined by the geometrical design of the anodes. The induced charge is calculated by solving the Poisson's equation with the appropriate boundary conditions. Furthermore, the presented model simultaneously considers a random point of photon absorption and a random drift length for each carrier, taking into account the effect of multiple trapping and detrapping. The model developed in this article enables the optimal geometrical design of the 2D array of anodes according to the electrical properties of the given semiconductor material, in order to achieve optimal results for the spectral performances. The model consists of three parts. The first is the calculation of the potential at each point of a three-dimensional (3D) map of the device. The second is the calculation of the charge induced on the anode by a point charge positioned in the device (for each point of a 3D map). The third is the statistical calculation of the pulse height spectrum. Finally, the pulse height spectrum is calculated as a function of the geometrical design, photon energy, electron and hole mobility, lifetime, mean detrapping time and applied voltage as well as the shaping time. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The destabilization of a planar solid/liquid interface during resolidification of the molten surface layer of Si–Sn alloys is investigated. Experimental data are compared with the results of a transient numerical stability analysis. In that analysis the time evolution of an infinitesimal sinusoidal perturbation of a planar interface is investigated. For this the concentration profile in the melt as well as the temperature distributions in the melt and solid are divided into a base state and a state due to the perturbation. The highly nonuniform Sn profiles implanted in (100) silicon samples serve as initial conditions for the numerical calculations. Deviations from thermal equilibrium at the solid/liquid interface are considered. The critical concentration for breakdown is calculated as a function of solidification velocity and compared with the results of the analytical analysis of Huntley and Davis [Acta Metall. Mater. 41, 2025 (1993)]. It is further investigated whether an analytical steady-state stability analysis can be used to approximately describe the experiments considered. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We study the effect of the geometrical parameters of pixelated two-dimensional (2D) arrays of γ-ray spectrometers upon the distribution of the electric field lines, which are induced by the applied voltage. It is shown that the size and in particular the separation between anodes strongly affect the field uniformity. The electric field is calculated by three methods including: (i) a commercial software for 3D field analysis based on finite element method; (ii) a 3D finite difference approach; and (iii) the Moments method. The required boundary conditions and the calculation efficiency of each method are compared. Since the uniformity of the electric field strongly affects the spectral performance of pixelated 2D arrays of γ-ray spectrometers, the results presented here are important for the optimal design and modeling of such arrays. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Magnetostrictive multilayer films which combine exchange coupled giant magnetostrictive materials (amorphous Tb0.4Fe0.6) and soft magnetic materials with large polarizations and considerable magnetostriction (crystalline Fe0.5Co0.5) were prepared by magnetron sputtering. The microstructure and the magnetic properties of these multilayers were investigated as a function of the annealing temperatures and the corresponding film stresses. Giant magnetoelastic coupling coefficients (or magnetostrictions) are achieved at low fields, due to the magnetic polarization enhancement in such multilayers, the optimized stress state, and a suitable microstructure. For these optimized Tb0.4Fe0.6(7 nm)/Fe0.5Co0.5(9 nm) multilayers a saturation magnetoelastic coupling coefficient of 27.5 MPa at 20 mT and a coercive field of 2 mT has been achieved. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
