Notes: Summary This study compared the infections of chickens with virulent and avirulent strains of avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). Sixty 3-week-old chickens were infected by aerosol with a virulent strain of IBV and 60 with an avirulent strain. Immunofluorescent staining of impression smears and cryostat sections of the trachea revealed that the virulent IBV infected and destroyed the ciliated epithelial cells lining the trachea. The virus then became localized in subepithelial cells and was detectable for 21 days. The avirulent IBV infected only a few ciliated epithelial cells and there was no significant desquamation of the epithelium. The avirulent IBV, like the virulent, became localized in subepithelial cells and was detectable for 24 days. The immunologie response to virulent and avirulent IBV, as measured by virus neutralization titers, was similar at 19 days post infection. After this time, there was a divergence of the responses, with the virulent virus inducing ascending antibody titers while the antibody titers descended with the avirulent virus.

Notes: Summary No common antigenic determinants and no DNA sequence homologies were detected when three animal viruses, chicken anaemia agent (CAA), porcine circovirus (PCV), and psittacine beak and feather disease virus (PBFDV), all of which possess circular single-stranded DNA genomes, were compared. Negative contrast electron microscopy showed that PCV and PBFDV particles were 30% smaller than CAA particles and lacked the surface structure of CAA.

Notes: Summary.  Circoviruses are a diverse group of animal and plant pathogens with undefined relationships to one another but for their non-geminate, non-enveloped capsids and circular, single-stranded DNA genomes. The sequences of the beak and feather disease virus and porcine circovirus genomic DNAs are presented and analyzed in the context of the other members of the family. Sequence comparisons, inferred phylogenies, and geographic occurrence suggest that the ambisense circoviruses, particularly the beak and feather disease virus, represent an evolutionary link between the geminiviruses and the plant circoviruses. We propose that the family members be reclassified into three groups: The family Circoviridae consists of the animal pathogens (beak and feather disease virus and porcine circovirus) that possess ambisense genomes with striking similarities to the geminiviruses. The BBTV-like viruses include the plant pathogens (coconut foliar decay virus, banana bunchy top virus, subterranean clover stunt virus) with a geminivirus-like stem-loop element in their DNAs, and single to multiple component genomes. The chicken anemia virus is an unassigned virus possessing unique characteristics bearing little similarity to the other ssDNA viruses.

Notes: Summary An inhibitor of IBV attachment was demonstrated in bovine, swine, chicken and rabbit serum. The inhibitor found in bovine serum was associated with the gamma globulin fraction. The bovine inhibitor was a heterogeneous macromolecule with its sizes ranging from the 7 S to the 19 S globulins as characterized by ratezonal centrifugation and gel filtration. The inhibitory activity was destroyed by sulfhydryl reagents but resisted neuraminidase and acetone treatment and adsorption with kaolin. The activity of inhibitor from all species was reversed with simple sugars such as sucrose, glucose, and xylose. Alpha and beta methylated glucose was not only capable of reversing the inhibitor but it could increase IBV plaque numbers by 50% to 100% when used alone.
