Notes: Summary. A commercial machine for shelling peas was developed after numerous tests of methods for removing peas from pods. the pods are preheated in steam and then fed to a shelling section by means of a vibratory conveyor which aligns them for end-on presentation to a pair of rubber-covered rollers. A standardized feed gap between the conveyor and the rollers separates shelled peas from unshelled pods. Pods which fail to be gripped by the roller pass to a second slightly modified shelling section.Extensive tests showed that a greater yield of peas was obtained from the sheller operated on hand picked peas, than from conventional stationary or mobile viners operated on vines. Yield for the combination of a mechanical pea pod picker which would be necessary for commerical operations and the pea sheller was not determined. Peas from the sheller were virtually undamaged in contrast to vined peas and were consequently superior in flavour.Storage of pods for periods of several days before shelling led to an increase in pea maturity but quality was otherwise unaffected. Ability to store pods permits greater flexibility in harvesting and processing operations and allows an extension of the growing area serving a factory. In addition use of the pea sheller eliminates the need for most of the cleaning equipment as shelled peas are clean. Shelled peas pass directly to the processing line without any delay to cause deterioration.

Notes: Coda Q, Qc, has been estimated from seismograms of local earthquakes recorded on short-period seismographs on some of the eastern Caribbean islands of the Lesser Antilles arc, West Indies, using the S-S single-scattering model. the region was subdivided into four distinct subregions in order to investigate lateral variations in Qc. the Qc values exhibit a strong frequency dependence in the frequency band 1.5 to 16 Hz, with calculated coda Q at 1 Hz, Q0, ranging from a minimum of 97 in the Dominica area to a maximum of 145 in the Leewards. the degree of frequency dependence is also largest in the Dominica area (n= 1.09) and smallest in the Leewards (n= 0.82). Although there appears to be some lateral and depth variation of both Q0 and n in the region, this variation does not seem to be very significant.

Notes: Abstract  Here we investigate geochemical characteristics of sediment in different compartments of a karst aquifer and demonstrate that mobile sediments in a karst aquifer can exhibit a wide range of properties affecting their contaminant transport potential. Sediment samples were collected from surface streams, sinkholes, caves, wells, and springs of a karst aquifer (the Barton Springs portion of the Edwards (Balcones Fault Zone) Aquifer, Central Texas) and their mineralogy, grain-size distribution, organic carbon content, and specific surface area analyzed. Statistical analysis of the sediments separated the sampling sites into three distinct groups: (1) streambeds, sinkholes, and small springs; (2) wells; and (3) caves. Sediments from the primary discharge spring were a mix of these three groups. High organic carbon content and high specific surface area gives some sediments an increased potential to transport contaminants; the volume of these sediments is likely to increase with continued urbanization of the watershed.

Notes: Abstract We report the use of the laryngeal mask airway to facilitate the insertion of a percutaneous tracheostomy (Ciaglia kit) in two patients. This method has not been reported previously. We believe that in selected patients the technique described increases the ease of placement of a percutaneous tracheostomy.

Notes: Summary Pulsed NMR was used to observe anisotropy in the state of water absorbed by the fibrous protein keratin. Aligned masses of Rhinoceros horn keratin were used for the study. The spin-spin relaxation time showed a slight dependence on the orientation of the fibre direction with respect to the magnetic field. This effect is interpreted as indicating a slightly greater rotational freedom of the absorbed water molecules about axes parallel to the fibre direction than otherwise. The observed orientation dependence was too small to enable any trends due to temperature of level of absorption to be detected.
