Notizen: Abstract The rheology of concentrated planar fiber suspensions is investigated. A new experimental technique for fiber suspensions based on a sliding plate rheometer incorporating a shear stress transducer is developed. It is shown that this instrument works well for the tested material systems. The rheological behavior in steady shear is subsequently investigated. The results can be largely explained by a combination of frictional and hydrodynamic interaction. Despite this evidence of friction no yield stress could be detected for the investigated shear rates. It was also found that the fiber aspect ratio did not influence the steady shear viscosity.

Notizen: Abstract The rheological behaviour of Newtonian suspensions of platelets with an aspect ratio ranging from 0.006 to 0.2 is studied in this work. Using model particles to correlate the aspect ratios square-shaped particles with their sedimentation behaviour, the results obtained were used to estimate the average aspect ratio of mica particles. A comparison is made between the aspect ratio measured by sedimentation experiments and that determined from the rheological behaviour of dilute suspensions. Their good agreement shows that the average aspect ratio of a polydispersed suspension of platelets estimated using packing experiments correlates well with the apparent aspect ratio given by the intrinsic viscosity of the suspension.

Notizen: The crystallization behavior of polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polyoxymethylene (POM), polyethyleneterephtalate (PET), and polypropylene (PP) under nonisothermal conditions has been studied. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to monitor crystallization from the melt and a kinetic model has been proposed to describe three-dimensional spherulitic crystal growth. The model, which accounts for crystalline growth rate, uses two modified Avrami equations to represent both heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation and growth processes. The model parameters are all associated with physical constants. The predicted evolution of absolute crystallinity showed good agreement with experimentally obtained values for a wide range of cooling rates. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notizen: Process-induced effects on thermoplastic-based composites were investigated for laminates processed under high production rate conditions. Press-formed carbon-fiber-reinforced poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) was used as a model system. The morphology and laminate quality were investigated on unidirectional laminates processed at cooling rates from 0.3 to 120°C/s and annealing of 177°C and 300°C. The laminate quality was examined for degree of consolidation, compaction, and fiber-matrix uniformity. Combined calorimetric and density measurements, as well as micrographic techniques, were used for examination of the laminates. The fracture toughness for the laminate was measured as a function of the position over the thickness of a 40-ply thick unidirectional laminate. This study clearly demonstrates the importance of uniform pressure distribution over the laminate to achieve a void free and homogeneous laminate.
