Notes: The view that the role of European Works Councils (EWCs) is shaped predominantly by national industrial relations (IR) traditions in the company's country of origin derives largely from the experience of EWCs in companies based in continental Europe. This article argues that a more differentiated approach to the influence of national IR factors on EWCs needs to be developed to take account of the circumstances of companies headquartered in the UK and the US, whose national IR arrangements do not provide a strong institutional model for the EWC and, in the case of US-based companies, where headquarters management has little or no direct involvement in the EWC. Findings from comparative case studies of EWCs in eight UK- and US-based multinationals suggest that their character is shaped by the interplay between ‘country-of-origin’ factors,‘country-of-location’ factors and structural, company-specific considerations.

Notes: In 1998 three Danish universities developed an interdisciplinary, problem-oriented curriculum in order to strengthen capacity-building capabilities in the area of environmental education, training and research at universities and research organisations in Malaysia and Thailand earmarked for environment and development assistance by the Danish government. The programme, which was partly implemented in developing countries as periods of fieldwork, represented important educational innovations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate these activities. The distinct principles forming the educational foundation of the programme were identified. These related to the curriculum organization, the learning tasks and the learning environment. The first step in a cogent evaluation process was to examine how the educational principles were oprerationalized into practical teaching/learning steps. In the next step, they formed the criteria for the evaluation. On the basis of quantitative and qualitative data it was shown that the programme fulfilled the stipulated accademic requirements.

Notes: Abstract A control soil stored at 4°C was analyzed 38 times by fumigation-extraction during a period of 11 months to correct for variations caused by the analytical procedure. The difference in extractable C between fumigated and unfumigated samples oscillated around the average without a positive or negative trend. When data from contemporaneously extracted field samples were corrected with control soil data the variations were lowered. The deviations between corrected and uncorrected biomass C values had maxima of ±12%. Data obtained for seven dates using pre-extraction, wet-sieving, and centrifuging were compared with data obtained by the conventional procedure without any pretreatment. A negative difference from data obtained without pretreatment was found when the soil water content was decreased to 6%. The largest positive difference (+38%) was found in May during the period of highest root growth.

Notes: Summary Combining dielectrophoretic and hydrodynamic forces in micro electrode structures allows enrichment and stable trapping of viruses in aqueous solutions. Fluorescently labelled Influenza and Sendai viruses were collected from solutions of 2*105 – 2*108 viruses/μl within a few seconds. In the central part of the trap a virus aggregate of about 2–9 μm in diameter was formed. This corresponds to a local enrichment of viruses up to a factor of about 1400.

Notes: The operation of a micro-chip-based fluid circulator based on the interaction of a high-frequency traveling wave with a thermally generated inhomogeneity in an aqueous medium is investigated. The profiles of the electric field, the thermal gradient and the driving force within the device are derived numerically, and the dependence upon applied voltage under different experimental conditions is derived. The importance of convection in the operation of the device is assessed by operating it in various orientations, as well as under microgravity, and also by investigating the reversal and turn-on characteristics. The pump showed the unexpected ability to trap microparticles present in the driven fluid.

Notes: The traveling-wave-induced linear transfer of dielectric particles like living cells and artificial objects of microscopic dimensions is analyzed. It is shown that the electrode geometries must correspond to particle sizes to allow an effective manipulation of particles immersed in weakly electrolytic solutions by high frequency traveling waves. The theoretical model elaborated in this paper is in good agreement with experimental results obtained in microfabricated chambers of linearly arranged electrodes. It explains the behavior of homogeneous cellulose spheres as well as that of membrane-covered pine polls. The traveling-wave-driven electrodes are described by a superposition of time-dependent point charges. Subsequently, each of these point charges has to be considered as polarizing the dielectric particle and interacting with the polarized particle. This results in forces which effectively translocate the particle.
