Notes: Summary.  A unique commercial lead weight from the western Black Sea region is examined in its metrological and historical context. The style and combination of relief symbols on the object (Athenian owl and Kyzikene tunny) suggest a quarter mina in a market weight system used equivalently at Athens and Kyzikos by the last quarter of the fifth century BC, and developed within a long-term process of broad commercial integration of the Aegean and Black Seas in Classical times. The authors consider such a process to have been caused by the economic motivations of individual city-states, not the direct Athenian imperialism expressed in the so-called Standards Decree.

Notes: Abstract The Faraday rotation associated with the Zeeman effect in gases is used to rotate the plane or polarization of plane polarized light with low loss of intensity. Advantage is taken of the rapid decrease of absorption relative to Faraday rotation between the split Zeeman components. Calculations of this Faraday rotation are applied to obtain design parameters for an isolator for 5.26 μm which show a significant improvement over conventional designs.

Notes: n-Hexylcarborane (NHC) is the proposed burning rate modifier for improved propellants to be used in the next generation of missiles. The synthesis of this material requires decaborane-14, a material that is not commercially available in large quantities now. Therefore, the cost-effectiveness of synthesized NHC, as it relates directly to the missile cost, depends upon a low-cost synthesis of decaborane-14. Laser induced chemistry, a revolutionary new kind of chemistry, offers a much more efficient and less expensive way to synthesize compounds than conventional thermochemistry provides. Using this technique, we have synthesized decaborane-14 from diborane in high yields and high purity using both CO2 and DF laser frequencies. The products are decaborane-14 formed as white crystals and pentaborane-9 in the gaseous state; thus, isolation of the decaborane-14 is a simple chemical engineering procedure.
